CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team came up short on Saturday night in a Senior Night Homecoming match against High Point, 2-1.
PC moves to 8-8-0 on the year and 5-5-0 in the Big South. The Blue Hose, who have clinched a berth in the Big South Conference Women's Soccer Championship tournament, will wrap up their regular season at Winthrop on Tuesday at 6 p.m. High Point improves to 7-9-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Big South and will host Campbell on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The two teams stood tied 1-1 at halftime thanks to a Blue Hose goal late in the opening period. PC created six corner kick opportunities to High Point's zero in the first half and cracked the Panthers' defense with 30 seconds left before halftime. Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) lifted a corner kick that Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) pushed into the front of the net for Emily McCord (Asheville, N.C.), who rocketed a shot into the top of the net. The goal marked the freshman's second of the season and sent the teams into the break tied, 1-1.
High Point scored 3:07 into the second half for the deciding goal. A tic-tac-toe play from Kelli Joline and Taylor Parker moved the ball to Jenny Marshall in front of the net for the Panther's second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.
Becca Hemby put High Point on the scoreboard in the 18th minute. The senior midfielder received a pass across the front of the goal box from Kelsey Perrell and launched a shot from the left side into the top right corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
PC created two distinct, strong chances in the second half. A ball found Rebecca Miller (Pauline, S.C.) in the 77th minute and the senior pushed a shot that sailed inches wide of the left post. Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) also found herself open in the 82nd minute for a chance that rolled wide left as well.
Blue Hose goalkeeper Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) played the first half before giving way to Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas). Broadway made one save and re-entered the game 25:40 into the second half. Fontenot stopped two shots on the night.
Hemby and Marshall led High Point with four shots on the night with two on goal. Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga.) tallied four to led the Blue Hose.
Prior to the match, PC honored seniors Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.), Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.), Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.), Allen, Broadway, Simpson and Miller. The seven have combined for 441 matches, 30,384 minutes and 127 points.
