CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team
dropped a Sunday afternoon home match to Western Carolina at Templeton Tennis
Courts, 5-2.
PC moves to 3-3 on the year while Western Carolina improves
to 1-0 in the team's season opener. The Blue Hose take a weeklong break from
competition before beginning Big South Conference play on Sunday at Longwood at
1 p.m.
Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Lucia Leahy
(Charlotte, N.C.) each picked up singles victories while deLoach and Kayla
Stanford (Canton, Ga.) grabbed a win in doubles action. The wins mark the third
of the season for both deLoach and Leahy.
deLoach found herself against Sara Ruiz Pajares at the third
set and the Blue Hose cruised, knocking off the Catamount by a 6-3, 6-2 margin.
Leahy gutted out a tough win over Shannon Bettiol at No. 5,
earning the victory by a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 score.
A pair of matches came down to the third set. Greer Ransom
(Athens, Ga.) fell to Stacia Kissell at the top flight in a marathon despite
winning the first set, coming up short, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-6).
At the sixth set, Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) took the
first set from Erin Maguire, 6-3, before dropping the next two, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).
Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) stumbled at No. 2 to Karen
Jimenez, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, deLoach and Stanford knocked off Parajes
and Maguire, 8-5. The Catamounts clinched the doubles point with an 8-2
top-flight win and an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
