The Presbyterian College softball team capitalized on two Eagle errors to score two runs in the sixth, rallying back from a one-run deficit, and taking the 4-3 win in the second game against Winthrop this afternoon at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hose fell in game one, 7-0.
PC moved to 16-16 overall and 2-5 in the Big South, while Winthrop went to 17-15, 5-3. Both teams face each other in the final game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
Game One: WU 7, PC 0
The Eagles pounded out 10 hits and held PC to just two en route to the 7-0 win in game one of the three-game softball series.
Collecting hits for the Blue Hose were Erin Taylor who hit a double to left field, her second of the season, in the second inning, and Erin Ruff who led off the third with a single to the shortstop.
Sutton Watson (11-8) was almost flawless in the circle for Winthrop, throwing 7.0 innings and surrendering just two hits and striking out five. Kensley Loudermelk (9-8) gave up seven runs off nine hits, while striking out three for PC.
The Eagles spotted three runs in the first inning, capitalizing on two walks and a RBI double by McKenzi Corn. Alex White added a run for Winthrop in the third with a solo home run to left field, while Chelsey Schoenfeldt added three runs in the sixth with her three-RBI home run over the centerfield wall to give the Eagles the 7-0 lead and eventual win.
Game Two: PC 4, WU 3
PC recorded 10 hits in a solid all-around effort in game two, with three players collecting multiple hits and three more posting at least one. Taylor led the team with three hits while Powell's two RBI paced the Blue Hose in that category. Kelsey Barnette earned the win (2-2) after going 1.0 inning and giving up two hits and two runs.
PC put a runner in scoring position in the third inning with a double to left center by Jill McLean. After advancing to third off a Ruff single, she scored when Kersten Legacki brought her home off a single to left field. The Blue Hose added another run in the fourth to go up 2-0 after Taylor came home off a RBI single from Tera Powell.
The Eagles responded in the fifth with a two-run home run by Kristy Noble and a RBI double by Kathryn Eberlin.
PC capitalized on two Winthrop errors in the sixth with two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Powell reached on an error to bring home Alyssa Goodin, who was pinch-running for Taylor after she led off the inning with a single. Morgan Durham, who had reached on a single to second, scored a batter later when the Winthrop catcher overthrew second on a steal attempt by Powell.
Sydney Seigler, who came in relief for the Blue Hose, struck out two in the sixth and retired the side in the seventh to preserve the win for PC and earn her first save of the season.
