The Presbyterian College softball team used a six-run first inning, which included a three-run home run by Kersten Legacki and a two-run homer by Alex Reetz,, to earn the eventual 8-4 win over the Winthrop Eagles this afternoon at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C. With the win PC took two of three from Winthrop in the regular season series.
PC improved to 17-16 overall and 3-5 in the Big South, while Winthrop dropped to 17-16, 5-4. PC is next in action Wednesday, April 3, when the Blue Hose travel to USC Upstate for a 6 p.m. contest.
Cat Tarvin picked up her third win of the season (3-1), going 6.2 innings, striking out four and giving up just four runs off 12 hits. Erin Ruff paced the team with two hits and two RBI. Legacki recorded three RBI, while Reetz added two on the afternoon.
Tera Powell opened the first inning with a single back to the shortstop. After stealing second she scored a batter later after Ruff singled up the middle to drive her home. Tarvin drew a walk to put two PC runners on the bases. Legacki capitalized with a three-run home run, her fifth of the year, to give the Blue Hose the early 4-0 lead.
Reetz added two more with her first career home run, this one a two-run shot over the left field wall to take PC up 6-0.
Winthrop fought back in the third with a solo home run by Kristy Noble. Winthrop collected four singles in a row after that, the third a RBI sot to third base that scored McKenzi Corn to cut PC's lead to four, 6-2.
A RBI single by Ruff in the fifth gave PC a 7-2 lead, before Kayla Dunlap came through in the sixth with a RBI double to right center that scored Morgan Durham to make it 8-2.
Winthrop rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off four hits but Sydney Seigler game in with bases loaded and two outs and struck out the last batter to keep the Eagles at bay and take her second save in as many games.
