The Presbyterian College softball team combined for 19 hits and 13 RBI to go 2-1 in action today at the North Carolina Central Tournament being held in Durham, N.C. After defeating N.C Central, 9-1, in five innings, the Blue Hose fell to UNC Wilmington, 7-3 in the second game. PC rebounded with an eight-inning, 5-4 win over the Seahawks in the final game of the day.
PC, which moves to 10-10 on the year, returns to Clinton for back-to-back home games with East Tennessee State Thursday, Mar. 14 at 2 p.m. and Towson Saturday, Mar. 16 at 12 p.m. Both games are doubleheaders.
Game One: PC 9, NCCU 1 (5)
The Blue Hose scored six runs in the first two innings to take the eventual 9-1 win over North Carolina Central in five innings, in PC's first game of the day. Several players recorded multiple hits, including Cat Tarvin who knocked in the first run of the game off a double in the first inning. Shelby Petik, who had two hits as well, drove in her first of two RBI in the first inning to help PC take the early 3-0 lead.
Erin Ruff recorded her fist of two RBI with a single in the second to give PC a 4-1 lead. Petik added her second RBI with a single to center field as the Blue Hose opened up a 6-1 lead after the first two innings.
After Tarvin and Kersten Legacki scored runs in the fourth, Ruff knocked a RBI double down the left field line in the fifth, giving PC an eight-run lead. The Eagles were unable to muster another run in the fifth as PC took the 9-1 win in the run-rule shortened game.
Kesley Barnette earned the win to move to 1-1 on the year. She threw a complete game and surrendered just one run off seven hits and five strikeouts.
Game Two: UNCW 7, PC 3
UNC Wilmington pounded out 11 hits, while holding PC to just two, both coming from Petik, to take the 7-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Loudermelk went to 6-5 on the year after going the distance and giving up three earned runs off 11 hits. Casey Rowland earned the win (5-5) with seven strikeouts.
UNC Wilmington went up 2-0 in the first inning off a two-RBI single by Lauren Buckworth. The Seahawks added four more in the fourth, helped in part to two RBI singles, to go up 6-0. Petik laced a two-RBI single in the fourth inning as the Blue Hose tried to come back, making it 6-2.
The Seahawks made it 7-2 off a RBI single by Erin Brown in the sixth, before PC rallied with a run in the seventh. With one out Petik singled up the middle and came home off a sacrifice fly by Morgan Durham. That would be it as the next batter hit into a fielder's choice, with Mary Ellen Morris out on the play.
Game Three: PC 5, UNCW 4 (8)
Durham hit a three-run home run to lead PC to the 5-4 eight-inning win in over UNC Wilmington in its final game of the NC Central Tournament.
The Blue Hose cranked out eight hits, three coming from Durham and two coming from Tarvin and Petik.
Petik's first hit came in the fourth inning with a RBI single to left that plated Tarvin, who had led off the inning with a single herself. After UNC Wilmington scored three runs the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead, Durham gave PC the lead again in the sixth with a three-run home run over the centerfield wall, her fourth of the season.
UNC Wilmington knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh to set up extra innings. A RBI base-hit up the middle by Petik drove in Amber Johnson for the go-ahead run in the top of the eight.
Seigler struck out the last two UNCW batters in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the one-run win for PC. Seigler earned the win, coming in relief for 3.1 innings and surrendering just two hits and no earned runs.
