Coastal Carolina pitchers surrendered just nine combined hits, while the Chanticleer offense pounded out 16 en route to the 6-2 and 5-1 wins over the Presbyterian College softball team in doubleheader action this afternoon in Conway, S.C.
PC drops to 19-26 overall and 5-12 in the Big South, while Coastal Carolina improves to 30-18, 15-5. Both teams meet again Sunday for a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
Game One: CCU 6, PC 2
Collecting hits on the day in game one for PC were Jill McLean, Morgan Durham and Kersten Legacki. After three innings of no-hit ball, McLean singled to left in the fourth to notch the team's first hit. Durham followed her with a single to second and advanced off a fielding error by the CCU left fielder, which plated McLean to give the make it a 2-1 game.
PC's third hit came in the seventh after Legacki single to left to load the bases with one out. Alyssa Goodin came in to pinch hit and drew a RBI walk to give the Blue Hose their second run of the game.
Leading Coastal Carolina was Jazmin Daigle who went two-for-four with two RBI. Her first hit and RBI came in the first inning with her single driving home Kory Hayden, who had reached on a PC error, for CCU's second run. The first came off the PC error that put Hayden on first.
Bri Chiusano went three-for-four with one RBI. She singled to third in the fourth to plate Morgan Noad and put the Chanticleers up 3-1.
Daigle's double in the fourth gave her RBI number two, while Noad's fielder's choice allowed to score two batters later as CCU opened up the 5-1 lead. Chiusano scored off a Kiana Quolas single in the sixth to give CCU the final 6-2 win.
Kensley Loudermelk threw a complete game for PC, allowing four earned runs off seven hits. She struck out five while moving to 10-12 on the season.
Kiana Quolas went seven innings for Coastal, scattering just three hits and giving up two runs. She struck out nine and retired the side in order four of seven innings to move to 18-9.
Game Two: CCU 5, PC 1
Tera Powell, who went three-for-four, earned her first hit of the day with a single up the middle to open game two. PC was unable to capitalize as Ashley Bagwell struck out two of the next three batters to end the threat. Hayden doubled in the bottom of the first to put runners on second and third with just one out. A PC error the next at-bat and the Chanticleers took the early 1-0 lead.
Shelby Petik garnered PC's second hit of the game in the second, but Bagwell struck out the next two batters again to keep the Blue Hose at bay.
Cacia Pierre made it 2-0 in favor of Coastal with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. PC added its own homer in the fourth with a solo shot by Cat Tarvin, her eighth, to make it 2-1. The Blue Hose followed it up with a fielder's choice and a walk to put runners at first and second, but the next batter hit into a double play to end the inning.
Pierre hit her second home run of the game, with a shot over the centerfield wall, to give CCU the 3-1 lead after the fifth. The Chanticleers added two runs in the sixth, in part to a RBI-double by Jessie Winans and a sacrifice fly by Hayden as Coastal took the eventual 5-1 win.
Tarvin threw five innings and scattered three runs off seven hits for the loss (4-4), while CCU's Ashley Bagwell (10-7) went a complete game, striking out nine and surrendering just one run off five hits.
