Coastal Carolina scored 12 runs in the first two innings to take the eventual 14-2 win in five innings over the Presbyterian College softball team in Big South action this afternoon in Conway, S.C.
PC drops to 19-27 overall and 5-13 in the Big South, while Coastal Carolina improves to 31-18, 16-5. The Blue Hose head up to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 24, at 4 p.m.
Kiana Quolas (19-9) earned the win for Coastal, going four innings and scattering six hits and one earned run. Sydney Seigler took the loss for PC (2-6) after surrendering six runs off five hits.
The Blue Hose used singles by Morgan Durham and Cat Tarvin to load the bases in the first inning and scored the game's first run after Shelby Petik drew a walk. That would be it as the next PC batter struck out to end the inning, but not before the Blue Hose took the 1-0 lead.
Coastal Carolina opened the bottom of the first with four straight singles to quickly tie the game. Jazmin Daigle drew a walk to bring in another run, before Paige Goldsack doubled down the right field line to plate two more. The Chanticleers added two more and held a 6-1 lead as the first inning drew to a close.
The Chanticleers tacked on six more runs in the second to build a 12-1 lead. Highlighting the offense was a three-run home run by Jessie Winans.
A two-RBI double by Jenna Goldsack in the fourth inning increased CCU's lead to 13, 14-1.
PC attempted a rally in the fifth with an inning-opening single by Durham, who went two-for-two on the day, and a double by Kersten Legacki, to put runners on second and third with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Erin Ruff drove in Durham to make it 14-2 before the next PC batter struck out to end the game after five innings.
