After falling behind 5-1 in the fifth, the Presbyterian College softball team scored a run in each of the next three innings to cut the lead to one, and had the tying run at second, but that was as far as the Blue Hose could get, falling by the 5-4 final to Campbell in Big South action this afternoon at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C.
PC drops to 17-18 overall and 3-5 in the Big South, while Campbell improves to 25-12, 9-2. The Blue Hose and Camels will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 6 at 12 p.m., and 2 p.m., as opposed to a single game.
Cat Tarvin led the home team's effort, going two-for-four with two RBI. Morgan Durham collected a RBI as well, off her one for-three effort at the plate. Tera Powell was three-for-four on the afternoon and scored two of PC's four runs. Campbell was led by Stephanie Jones who had two RBI off a two-for-two effort.
Kensley Loudermelk threw 4.0 innings for PC and allowed just two earned runs off six hits, while striking out two, in the loss (9-9). Courtney Roberts earned the win for Campbell (13-4) in 6.0 innings of work. She struck out five and surrendered just two earned runs off six hits. Brittany Arnn came in to pitch in the seventh and earned the save, giving up just two hits and one run.
Powell scored PC's opening run in the bottom of the first after reaching on a single. She scored three batters later off a Tarvin double to left center to give PC the early 1-0 lead. The Blue Hose would hold that until the Camels came up to bat in the top of the fourth.
Sarah Forgacs reached first off an error to lead off the inning. After advancing to third off a Olivia Scarborough double, she scored on a fielder's choice by Brittany Bruce when the out attempt failed at home. Bruce and Shaela Churchill, who reached on a fielder's choice as well, plated a batter later off a two-RBI single by Jones, and Campbell led 3-1.
The Camels got two more in the fifth after opening the inning with back-to-back singles. Scarborough and Bruce earned RBI the next two batters after both grounded out to second base, allowing the fourth and fifth runs to score.
PC scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when Powell led off the inning with a double. She scored the next at-bat off an error by Campbell and the Blue Hose cut the margin to three, 5-2.
A home run in the sixth by Tarvin, her sixth, made it 5-3 before Durham opened the seventh with her seventh homer of the season to cut Campbell's lead to one, 5-4. Powell followed with a base hit and reached second when McLean sacrificed her over. Arnn recovered and retired the next two batters to quell the rally and give the Camels the one-run win.
