Softball Drops a Pair of Close Contests to Bucs on Senior Day

After falling behind early in both games, the Presbyterian College softball team fought back and had the game-winning runs in position to score, but the Blue Hose could not get them across the plate, falling to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in both games of the doubleheader, 7-6 and 7-5, in Big South action this afternoon at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C.

The four PC seniors, Morgan Durham, Mary Ellen Morris, Tera Powell and Cat Tarvin, were honored in a pregame ceremony.

The Blue Hose fall to 22-30 overall and 7-16 in the league, while the Bucs improve to 13-38, 6-17

Leading CSU was Marci Christian, who went four-for-five on the day with two RBI off two solo home runs in game one, the first coming during the Bucs' first at-bat.  Leading in RBI was Linzy Rother, who had three off a two-for-six effort.  She recorded a three-run home run in the first inning of game two to give the Bucs the early 3-0 lead.

Stephanie Sbardella posted a two-RBI day with her two-run double in the fourth inning of the first game that helped put CSU up 7-2.  Natalie Yonan hit a home run in that inning as well, a solo shot over the center field wall.

Courtney Lawton led the PC effort, going four-for-six with two RBI.  She posted a RBI in each game, the first in the fifth inning off a double to center that drove in Jill McLean to cut CSU's lead to three, 7-4.  Her second came off a single in the fifth.  Tera Powell added a RBI in each contest as well, the first with a double in the seventh inning of game one to bring home Lawton to make it 7-6 and put herself in scoring position with one out.

Erin Taylor added two more RBI to her season total as well.  She picked up on off a fielder's choice in the fourth and another in the sixth with a solo home run, her third of the season, that made it a two-run game, 7-5.

Jennifer Giles moved to 8-27 with the win in game one.  She struck out six and surrendered five earned runs off 10 hits for CSU.  Rother went 5.0 innings for the Bucs in game two and gave up three earned runs off 11 hits.

Kensley Loudermelk went to 12-14 on the year with the loss for PC.  She gave up six earned runs off seven hits.  Cat Tarvin moved to 5-5 after throwing 2.1 innings and giving up four earned runs off five hits.

Both teams face each other in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
