Furman Edges Women's Soccer in Narrow Friday Result, 2-1

GREENVILLE, S.C.Stephanie Allen (West Columbia, S.C.) scored a late goal in the Presbyterian College women's soccer team's Friday night match at Furman, but the Paladins proved able to hold on for a 2-1 non-conference victory at Stone Soccer Stadium.

PC moves to 0-2 while Furman improves to 1-1. The Blue Hose return home to host USC Upstate on Sunday, September 8 at 2 p.m.

In the 82nd minute, Allen laced a 25-yard free kick into the back of the net for her first of the season. The goal cut Furman's two-goal lead in half and the PC attack looked to create a chance for an equalizer in vain.

PC sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) made a career-high 11 saves in the match, including six in the first half and one in the 84th minute to keep PC within one. Fontenot set her previous high of 10 in her first career start last season against the same Paladins. Seven shots the sophomore faced on Friday came from Stephanie DeVita.

Furman's Jamie Alexander scored in the 12th minute from an India Robinson cross and DeVita made it 2-0 in the 79th minute by tapping in a Dee Makris cross.

The preseason Southern Conference favorites peppered the PC defense with chances but the Blue Hose held strong. Allen, Rebecca Miller (Pauline, S.C.) and Kristen Peagler (Lithonia, Ga.) each fired shots on Furman goalkeeper Maggie Grisell as well. All three opportunities on goal came in the second half.
