CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team used a Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.) to pick up a victory in its 2013 home opener on Sunday, knocking off USC Upstate in a 1-0 result.
PC moves to 1-2-0 on the year and hosts The Citadel on Friday at 7 p.m. USC Upstate falls to 1-4-1.
The Blue Hose struck quickly, scoring 10:01 for the game's only goal. Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) lifted a pass over the Upstate back line for a waiting Lopez, who chipped the ball over Upstate goalkeeper Sarah Plantz for the score.
Lopez's goal would hold up as the only one despite a bevy of chances for both sides. PC outshot the visitors by a 20 to nine count and enjoyed a five to one corner kick advantage. Six different Blue Hose tallied a shot on goal, including two from Whitson—one saved by a Spartan on the goal line—and three from Lopez. Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga.) also fired two shots that required diving saves from Plantz.
Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) made four saves for a clean sheet. The senior stopped Upstate's Rachel Baylor on a clean breakaway late in the match and saved three shots in the second half.
Emily McCord (Asheville, N.C.), Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) and Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) played all 90 minutes on the back line and stymied the Upstate attack throughout the match.
Baylor led Upstate with two shots. Plantz made eight saves for the Spartans.
