FARMVILLE, VA- The Presbyterian College women's soccer team played the Longwood Lancers to a 3-3 double overtime tie in Big South Conference action on Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Hose held a 2-0 lead early in the second half before the Lancers responded with three unanswered goals to take back the lead. PC scored a goal in the final 16 minutes of regulation to tie it up, but neither team would tally a goal in either 10-minute overtime period.
Keri O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga.) scored her second goal of the season in the 38th minute when she played through the defense and scored from the right side. Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) was credited with the assist on the goal. PC held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Blue Hose outshot the Lancers 6-4 in the first half, including four shots on goal. Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) recorded two saves in goal in the first half to keep the Lancers off the board for the first 45 minutes of action.
Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C.) scored her third goal of the season on a free kick from the left side in the 50th minute to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Longwood's leading goal-scorer, Amanda Spencer, tallied her sixth goal of the season in the 53rd minute to put the Lancers on the board. Teresa Fruchterman crossed the ball into the box for the assist on Spencer's goal.
Spencer scored again for the Lancers in the 60th minute off a free kick to tie up the game 2-2. The game-tying goal was Spencer's seventh on the year.
Samantha Phillips put the Lancers ahead 3-2 in the 67th minute when she scored on a penalty kick after a PC foul inside the box.
Presbyterian's Catie Smith (Greenville, S.C.) tied the game up 3-3 in the 74th minute on a loose ball in front of the goal. O'Neill's attempted shot was blocked and deflected back to Smith for the goal.
Fontenot made four saves during the 90 minutes of regulation play, while Longwood goalie Hailey Machen recorded three saves in her 45 minutes of action. Maria Kirby made one save when she came in goal during the second half. The Lancers outshot the Blue Hose 14-11 during regulation action.
Kristen Peagler (Lithonia, Ga.) and Sarah Yoss (Peachtree City, Ga.) both recorded shots in the first overtime period for PC, but neither team was able to produce a goal.
Fontenot finished the game with four saves in goal for the Blue Hose. Kirby played in goal for the 20 minutes of overtime and made two saves during that time for a total of three saves in the game.
Longwood finished the game with a 20-15 advantage in shots, but the Blue Hose held a 4-3 corner kick advantage.
Presbyterian will host Gardner-Webb on Wednesday Oct. 22 at Martin Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
