Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, VA- The Presbyterian College women's basketball team dropped the first game of the 2014-15 season on Friday night with a 41-26 loss to Old Dominion at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Blue Hose put together 15 second-half points, compared to the Monarchs' 19, but it wasn't enough to catch the hosts, who took a 22-11 lead at halftime.

Redshirt junior Keyonna Allen paced the Blue Hose (0-1) with 10 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Aianna Kelly added six points and nine boards.

PC won the opening tip-off, but neither team was able to produce a bucket until Kelly put the Blue Hose on the board four minutes into the game to take a 2-0 lead.

The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes, changing the lead three times and tying the score twice before sophomore Rebecca Walker had a big steal that turned into a 3-ball of her own on the other end to give PC a 7-5 lead with 11:55 on the clock. ODU would score 10 unanswered points, sparked by Ashley Jackson's 3-pointer with 10:33 left in the first. The hosts would not relinquish the lead, taking an 11-point advantage at the break and leading by as much as 18 points on two occasions in the second half.

Freshman Janie Miles came off the bench to score her first career points for PC late in the final minute of the game on an and-one jumper for three points. Redshirt freshman Kendra Talley had a bucket in final 30-seconds of the game, while freshman Cortney Storey and senior Noelle Carter each added one good foul shot to round out the scoring performance for the Blue Hose.

ODU's Jennie Simms led the Monarchs with 12 points. Chelisa Painter had nine points and eight rebounds, while Destinee Young added eight points and seven rebounds for the hosts.

The Blue Hose shot 22.4% from the floor (11-49) and 5.3% (1-19) from behind the arc. PC was 3 for 6 from the line, while ODU was 15-31.

PC will take on VCU on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
