CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball (1-2) team hits the road for a Saturday afternoon non-conference tilt against the Western Carolina Catamounts (1-1) at 3:30 p.m. The Blue Hose look to win their second straight following a record-setting 120-45 win over Allen on Tuesday night, eclipsing a 21-year old program record for most points scored in a game set against Newberry 117-40 on December 12, 1993. The game saw seven different Blue Hose hit double-figures and Allie Wagner post a double-double (20 points, 15 rebounds) as the team also came within two points of setting a program record for margin of victory in the 75-point win.
The Blue Hose and Catamounts have met twice in the series history, with Western Carolina taking both games. Last year, Western Carolina squeezed past PC in a 42-38 win at the Templeton Center in Clinton. Then-junior Noelle Carter set a new career high with 10 rebounds in the effort. Keyonna Allen scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds while Carter and Rebecca Allen chipped in five points apiece. The meeting marked the first since the 1988-89 season, when the Catamounts earned a 76-67 victory in Cullowhee.
Western Carolina enters Saturday with a 1-1 record after a season-opening loss to NC Central (64-59) and a 66-55 win over Livingstone on Monday. Freshman Sherae Bonner tied a school record with 26 rebounds against the Bears and recorded her second straight double-double to earn the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Week award. Bonner leads the Catamounts with 16.5 points and 19.5 rebounds per game while Justin Taylor adds 15.5 points and 7.5 boards per outing.
PC opened up the 2014-15 home schedule with a dominating 120-45 record-setting win over Allen on Tuesday night at the Templeton Center. Seven Blue Hose players scored in the double digits in the win, led by a strong showing by the freshman class. In addition to the program scoring record, the Blue Hose set Division I bests in field goals made (47), assists (30), rebounds (67). Miles's nine assists mark the third-most in a Division I game as well.
Freshman Allie Wager recorded her first double-double performance with an impressive 20 points and 15 rebounds on Tuesday against Allen. The double-double is the first one for a PC player since Keyonna Allen's 16-point, 12-rebound performance on February 8, 2014 and the first time a PC player has recorded 15 rebounds since Aianna Kelly did so on January 16, 2014.
With eight players playing in their first year of collegiate basketball, PC used 77 points and 45 rebounds from first-year players to knock off Allen on Tuesday. Allie Wagner led the group with 20 points and 15 rebounds while Tia Mason added 12 points and nine rebounds. Janie Miles knocked down four of six three-point attempts to score 18 points and Elizabeth Landers chipped win 10 points and nine boards. Jameka Braden scored her first career points in a 13-point effort and Kendra Talley scored four, including the 118th point to set a single-game program record.
Aianna Kelly made a splash in her rookie season and has continued over the first three games of 2014-15. The sophomore currently leads the team in points (8.7), rebounds (8.0) and field goals made (3.7) per game and has made all four of her free throws.
The Blue Hose will make the trek to Cincinnati for a Wednesday night matchup against Xavier at 7 p.m., the program's first-ever meeting against the Musketeers.
