BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Presbyterian College women's basketball (6-5, 1-1 Big South) ends 2014 with a Tuesday night Big South Conference clash at Campbell (6-5, 1-1 Big South) on December 30 at 7 p.m. The two teams each play for the first time since December 20 before the holiday break. Both teams enter with identical 6-5 records and 1-1 markers in the Big South Conference more than a third of the way through the season. The Blue Hose split games at Charlotte (50-66) and NC Central (45-33) before the break while Campbell went 1-1 in back-to-back games at Stetson (63-76) and Bethune-Cookman (66-55) in DeLand, Fla.
The Blue Hose hold a 4-3 record in the all-time series that began exactly four years ago on December 30, 2010 with a 53-51 PC victory. The teams split the two games last year, with Campbell grabbing the first game before a 58-53 Blue Hose victory in the second meeting. Rebecca Walker went 4-for-5 from the floor for 13 points, hitting all three of her shots from downtown in the effort. PC shot 47.6 percent against the Camels in the second meeting and neither team has won more than two games in a row in the all-time series.
Campbell will look to jump PC in the standings as both teams enter with a 1-1 Big South marker. The Camels won their last game against Bethune-Cookman in DeLand, Fla., to snap a two-game losing streak. Campbell's League win came at Charleston Southern (69-65) following a close road loss at Winthrop (59-61) 11 days prior. Freshman Amanda Coffer leads the team with 15.5 points per game while Kiera Gaines averages a team-best 9.4 rebounds while chipping in 12.4 points per outing.
PC powered its way to a lead shortly before halftime and never let go in its December 20 contest at NC Central, toppling the Eagles, 45-33. The Eagles' 33 points tied a season-low for a PC opponent this season. The Blue Hose held the Eagles to 26.2 percent shooting (11-for-42) and only one three-pointer on 13 attempts. Janie Miles scored a career-high 21 points, the first Blue Hose to break the 20-point plateau since Keyonna Allen notched 20 at Coastal Carolina on February 22 of last season. Miles scored 15 of her points from distance on a career-best five three-pointers. Allen paced PC on the boards with eight rebounds and Rebecca Walker chipped in 11 points.
The Blue Hose boast the nation's second-ranked scoring defense through their first 11 games, holding opponents to an average of 46.9 points per game. Charlotte set a new season-high for opponents on December 18 with 66 points, but PC bounced back two days later to hold NC Central to only 33 points.
PC also ranks second in the country in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 31.6 percent of their shots. PC has held 10 of its 11 its opponents to under 40 percent from the field this season after limiting NC Central to 26.2 percent (11-for-42) on December 20. The team accomplished that feat 22 times last season with a 9-13 record, allowing over 40 percent only eight times. The Blue Hose also rank second in the country in three-point field goal defense, allowing only 20.9 percent of shots from distance.
PC boasts a 4-0 record at home after the team's December 15 win over Southern Wesleyan. The Blue Hose hold opponents to 27.2 percent shooting at the Templeton Center and average a rebounding margin of +16.5. The team has maintained a winning record at home in each of the last three seasons, beginning in 2011-12.
Miles played a combined 11 minutes over the season's first two games but has started the last eight, logging 34 minutes in the Big South opener against Gardner-Webb and 31 at High Point. Miles leads the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game and scored 21 against NC Central on December 20. She averages 43.8 percent from three-point range and has hit 80.0 percent of her free throws.
PC returns home to host UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2 p.m. The matchup kicks off a busy stretch of four games in seven days for the Blue Hose, who travel to Liberty for a game on Monday, January 5 (7 pm.) before hosting Radford (Thursday, January 8) and playing at Coastal Carolina (Saturday, January 10).
