CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team battled to a rare draw on Saturday with a 3-3 road tie at Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
PC moves to 3-4-1 overall on the year and returns home to host Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Western Carolina moves to 0-4-1.
The Blue Hose took the doubles point and won two singles matches for three points. Western Carolina won three singles matches as well, and with neither team able to field a sixth-flight player, the match ended in a draw.
Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) and Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.) topped Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Kayla Stanford (Roswell, Ga.) then captured the doubles point at the second flight with an 8-5 win over Sara Ruiz Pajares and Megan McLinden for a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, deLoach bested Bettiol at the second flight, 7-5, 7-1. The win gave the junior her third win of the season, tying her with Alves, who matched deLoach with a thrilling win at the third flight. Alves used three sets to knock off Ruiz Pajares, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Catamouns took the top flight match with a win by Stacia Kissel and won at the fifth flight as well thanks to Erin Maguire. Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) nearly rendered the draw moot but came up short in a gutsy three-set loss to Megan McLinden at the fifth-flight, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
