Softball Earns Doubleheader Split at Charleston Southern

Shelby Petik's RBI single in the first inning proved to be enough to give the Presbyterian College softball team the 1-0 win over Charleston Southern in the second game of a Big South doubleheader this afternoon in Charleston, S.C.  The Blue Hose were able to salvage a split with the Bucs after falling in the first game, 6-2.

The Blue Hose move to 15-12 overall and 1-3 in the Big South, while CSU's record is now 17-17, 3-4.  Both teams face each other in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The game will air live on WKRI-FM i91.9, with Eric Thacker calling the action.

With two outs in the first inning of game two, Kersten Legacki drew a walk to reach first.  After a stolen base put her in scoring position, Petik knocked a base hit to centerfield, driving in Legacki for the game's only run.

In a game that saw just seven total hits, Petik collected another hit in the fourth, with Legacki notching a double in the sixth.  Jennifer Marshall recorded a single in the fifth as well, with PC ending the game with four hits.

Three different CSU batters had hits, but none were able to come home as the Bucs stranded five for the game, compared to four for PC.

Katie Brown was solid in the circle, earning the win (3-3) after throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout.  Cheyenne Gandara earned the loss for CSU (6-6) after giving up one run off four hits, while striking out six.

A scoreless game through four and a half innings, CSU scored four in the bottom of fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Jessica  Brock.  Hayes Holdswoth added a RBI, as well, with a ground-out to first, helping the Bucs take the 4-0 lead after five.

Petik came through in the first game as well, after her double to right in the top of the sixth drove in two runs to cut the deficit to two.

CSU responded with two more in the sixth to make it 6-2.  Brooke Holcomb, who came in to pinch-hit, knocked a two-run double to right, giving the Bucs the eventual final four-run win.

The Blue Hosed ended the game with just three hits, Jill McLean and Hope Rogers with the only other knocks for the team.  CSU finished the game with seven hits and just one error, compared to three for PC.

Sydney Seigler dropped to 8-7 on the year, after throwing 4.0 innings and giving up three earned runs off three hits.  Natasha Sherrod came in relief, giving up two runs off four hits in 2.0 innings.
