Erin Taylor hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th, driving in the game-winning run, as the Presbyterian College softball team came away with the dramatic 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina in action this afternoon in Clinton, S.C. With the win the Blue Hose take the regular-season series, 2-1, over the Chanticleers.
PC moves to 21-20 overall and 6-9 in the Big South, while Coastal goes to 29-13, 11-3. The Blue Hose travel to Gardner-Webb April 16, for a midweek conference game. Wednesday's game is set for 5 p.m.
Kiana Quolas paced CCU with her four-of-five effort, followed by Amanda Daneker, who went three-for-five with a team-leading two RBI. As a team the Chanticleers recorded 10 hits and two errors.
Shelby Petik led PC, going two-for-four, with one RBI. Jill Mclean and Kayla Dunlap posted a hit apiece, while Erin Taylor had one as well, with one RBI. PC ended with five hits on the day and no errors.
Ashley Bagwell threw a complete game for Coastal, surrendering four runs, only one of them earned, off five hits. She struck out 10 in the losing effort (11-7).
Sydney Seigler threw three innings, giving up just one hit in the win (11-10). Katie Brown started for PC, going 2.2 innings, surrendering two runs off three hits.
A solo home run in the first inning by Quolas, her sixth of the season, gave Coastal the early 1-0 lead, while a RBI base hit from Daneker, her first of three hits on the day, made it 2-0.
PC responded in the fourth with three runs, started by McLean's single with one out on the board. After Hope Rogers reached on an error, Petik doubled to left, bringing in McLean. Rogers and Petik scored three batters later off another Coastal error, and the Blue Hose suddenly led by one, 3-2.
It took until the top of the seventh inning, but the Chanticleers evened the score with a home run by Daneker to make it 3-3.
Despite chances by both teams to take the lead and possible win, the game moved to the 10th inning, still knotted at 3-3.
With Erin Ruff placed on second in the bottom of the 10th inning, per international tiebreaker rules, McLean advanced her to third off a sacrifice bunt. Rogers and Petik were intentionally walked to load the bases, before Kersten Legacki struck out for out number two. Taylor stepped up to the plate, and with the two strikes, hit a shot that fell just in front of the Coastal centerfielder, allowing Ruff to score the game-winning run as PC came away with the 4-3 win.
