Peagler Scores Game-Winner in Final Seconds of Double Overtime

CLINTON, S.C.- Kristen Peagler scored with 8 ticks remaining on the clock in the second overtime period to lead the Presbyterian College women's soccer team to a nail-biting 1-0 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Friday night at PC's Martin Stadium.

Peagler (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest DeKalb H.S.) took a long go-ahead pass in the final seconds of the second overtime from teammate Sarah Yoss (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mills H.S.) to get the win and prevent a 0-0 tie between the Bulldogs and the Blue Hose.

The game remained scoreless through both 45-minute halves, so the teams entered a 10-minute overtime period, which also went scoreless. It appeared that the game would be called as a 0-0 tie until Peagler's game-winner in the final stretch of the second 10-minute overtime.

Hannah Gaither (Stateville, N.S./Statesville H.S.) and Keri O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga./Sandy Creek H.S.) each recorded eight shots to lead the offensive attack for the Blue Hose. Also for PC, Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove H.S.) had five shots, Louise McGirt (Decatur, Ga./Chamblee Charter H.S.) had four, and Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C./Cardinal Newman H.S.) and Peagler tallied three shots. They recorded 37 shots, including 20 total shots in the second half of regulation play.

Dominique Brown had three shots for the Bulldogs, while Janell Cash, Naydeen Cabalo, and Amelia Green contributed two shots apiece. SC State tallied only 10 shots, only one of them occurring in the two periods of overtimes.

Goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas/James Bowie H.S.), as well as the assisting PC defenders, had a huge defensive game and earned a shutout for the second time this season. Fontenot recorded four saves in goal. For SC State, Haley Austin recorded an impressive 17 saves in goal.

The Blue Hose will continue their stretch of home games on Wednesday Sept. 24 when they host Radford in the first Big South Conference game of the season. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
