CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College football stays at home this weekend to host the No. 12 Furman Paladins in a Saturday night clash at 7 p.m. PC christened its brand-new lights last Saturday against Bluefield, putting a school-record 69 points on the Rams in a 69-14 victory. Saturday's game marks Military Appreciation Night, allowing active military members and their families free admission with a valid military ID.
my40 WYMA-TV will televise the game. The broadcast will also be carried on ESPN3 and the Big South Network. Eric Thacker and John Orck will have the call on Sunny 103.5 FM.
PC will look for revenge against the Paladins, who edged the Blue Hose with a 21-20 win in Greenville last year thanks to a missed 23-yard field goal with 18 seconds left. The nationally-ranked Paladins have won the last 15 meetings against the Blue Hose and PC will aim for its first win since a 17-10 victory on September 15, 1979. Furman moved to 2-0 last week with a 25-20 road win over Mercer in their Southern Conference opener in Macon, Ga. The Paladins hold the No. 12 spot in both the FCS Coaches' Poll and The Sports Network poll.
PC rolled to a 69-14 win over Bluefield Saturday night, setting a new school record for points scored in its 102nd season of football. The previous best came with 67 points scored against North Georgia Agricultural School on November 10, 1922. PC also scored 66 against North Greenville on October 4, 2007. The Blue Hose did most of their damage on the ground, setting school Division I (since 2007-08) records with 62 carries, 523 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
Furman used four field goals from Jon Croft Hollingsworth to help knock off the Mercer Bears in the Southern Conference opener on Saturday, 25-20. Hank McCloud scored a rushing touchdown as part of his team-leading 74 yards on the ground and Furman held the Bears to 135 passing yards and 24:54 time of possession.
College Sports Madness named its PC senior running back LaQua Mayes its Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Bluefield. Mayes racked up 161 yards on the ground, the third-most in PC's Division I single-game history. The senior running back broke off a 92-yard rush in the second quarter, the longest-ever in the Big South Conference. He rushed 13 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 12.4 yards per carry.
PC's big rushing day against Bluefield came in part from LaQua Mayes and Demarcus Rouse. Mayes picked up 161 yards on 13 carries, making his 12.4 yards per rush the highest in PC Division I history. Running back Demarcus Rouse also ran for 117 yards in his season debut, marking the second time in PC Division I history that the team posted two 100-yard rushers in the same game. The previous time came when Rouse (109 yards) and Lance Byrd (102 yards) achieved the feat at Charleston Southern on October 20, 2012. Rouse's 10.6 yards per rush ranked third in a PC Division I game.
PC's success on punt returns against Bluefield pushed PC to No. 7 in the country in that category. Tobi Antigha returned five punts against Bluefield for 87 yards, both PC Division I records. His 38-yard return on the game's first punt ranks fifth in the school's D-I ranks, four yards behind a 42-yarder that Devron Glenn posted later in the game.
Next week, the Blue Hose travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a Saturday night game against the NC State Wolfpack. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be shown on ESPN3.
