BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore scored the first two runs of the game, but the Presbyterian College softball team went on to score the next 12 runs to earn the five-inning victory in the teams' last game at the Hampton Inn Invitational in Buies Creek, N.C.
After opening the season on Friday with an 8-7 loss to St. John's, PC won out during the rest of the tournament to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Kensley Loudermelk (Taylorsville, N.C.) pitched all five innings for the Blue Hose, striking out four.
Hope Rogers (Gaston, S.C.) and Kersten Legacki (Cooper City, Fla.) led PC with 3-for-3 performances at the plate.
Two RBIs put the Hawks up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first, but Shelby Petik (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) jacked a 3-RBI homer to right center that sent Erin Ruff (Chardon, Ohio) and Jill McLean (Spotsylvania, Va.) home. Rogers and Legacki both doubled to get on base. Rogers scored on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Taylor (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Legacki scored on a wild pitch to put the Blue Hose up 5-2 at the end of the first inning of play.
At the bottom of the third, Rogers got on base with a double to left field and Legacki sent her home on an RBI up the middle to give PC at 6-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, McLean bunted to send Ashlyn Durham (Simpsonville, S.C.) home, who was pinch-running for Jordan Ashley (Abbeville, S.C.) after a nice single to right center. Ruff also had a bunt that sent Jenna Harris (Clayton, N.C.) home and advanced McLean to third. Petik hit fly out RBI to the shortstop to send McLean home for the score.
Rogers belted a two-run homerun to left center to score Ruff and Legacki homered to left field for a 10-run lead for the Blue Hose.
