CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team got past Western Carolina, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Templeton Tennis Courts.
The Blue Hose improve to 11-4 overall and the Catamounts fall to 3-7. PC will host Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a Big South Conference match.
Senior Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and freshman Sara McBride (Travelers Rest, S.C.) picked up singles wins for PC and paired up for PC's win in doubles competition.
deLoach and McBride beat Nicole Nielly and Erin Maguire at No. 2 doubles 8-3 as the pair improved to 7-0 overall on the year. Shannon Bettiol and Megan McLinden defeated PC's No. 1 doubles team of Brittany Nuttall (Athens, Ga.) and Claire-Mitchell Andrews (Tampa, Fla.) 8-1, but the Catamounts could not supply another player to the No. 3 team, so PC earned the doubles point by default.
In singles action, WCU defaulted at line six to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead. McLinden beat Nuttall in three sets at No. 1 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, Bettiol defeated Andrews 6-1, 6-0 at line 2, and Montse Mesalles earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Madison Utberg (Roswell, Ga.) at line 5 to give the Catamounts three singles points.
deLoach defeated Nielly at No. 3 singles in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-1 and McBride also won in three sets over Maguire 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to help lead the Blue Hose to its 11th win of the year.
