The Presbyterian College outscored Radford 14-5 in two games, but needed extra innings to take game two as the Blue Hose earned the 8-0 win in five innings in game one, and the 6-5 win in 10 innings in the second game Saturday afternoon at the PC Softball Complex.
PC improves to 12-11 overall and 3-1 in the Big South, while Radford drops to 6-14, 2-3. The teams round out the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
For the day PC was led by Blaire Miller, who was three-for five with two doubles and two RBI. Erin Ruff and Erin Taylor each had three hits, while Kersten Legacki posted two, with four RBI off two doubles.
Kensley Loudermelk had a flawless 0.00 ERA in 10.0 innings on the day, giving up just six hits and no earned runs, posting a 2-0 record. Sydney Seigler started for the Blue Hose in the second game, going 5.0 innings and surrendering two runs off five hits.
Game One: PC 8, Radford 0 (5)
Loudermelk was stellar in the circle, scattering three hits, all singles, with five Ks and no walks in game one. Supporting her at the plate was Erin Ruff and Blaire Miller with two hits apiece as part of the team's nine total hits. Jill McLean, Jenna Harris, Legacki, Taylor and Padgett Harrington each posted one hit apiece, with McLean, Petik, Ruff, Legacki and Harrington each posting at least one RBI.
Collecting hits for Radford were Megan Honaker with one and Becky Mantel with two. Taylor Asimakopoulos (2-1) took the loss for the Highlander, giving up seven hits and seven runs in 3.1 innings.
The Blue Hose took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when McLean laced a RBI single just past the shortstop, bringing home Miller, who hit her second double of the season, this on to center with one out on the board, to put herself in scoring position.
Taking the 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, the Blue Hose offense came alive starting with a solo home run by Taylor, her third of the season, to give the home team the 2-0 lead. Two singles, and two fielder's choices, plus a Radford error, PC found itself with bases loaded with just one out. Petik drew a bases loaded walk for the third run, while a Ruff single the next at-bat made it a 4-0 game.
Legacki cleared the bases the next play with a three-RBI double to left as PC took the 7-0 lead. Pinch hitter Harrington knocked a base hit up the middle to give the home team the eight-run lead.
Loudermelk, struck out two of her five batters of the game in the top of the fifth to continue to hold Radford scoreless and lead PC to the 8-0 win in five innings.
Game Two: PC 6, Radford 5 (10)
PC rallied with two runs in the seventh to force extra innings and another two in the 10th to take the 6-5 win and doubleheader sweep in the second game of the day.
PC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after Petik knocked over her third home run of the season in the bottom of the first.
The lead was short-lived as Radford responded with a two-run home run by Rowe to give the Highlanders the 2-1 advantage.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, PC strung together a few hits with Taylor getting on base with a single back to the pitcher. Miller doubled to right to plate Taylor and the Blue Hose tied the game at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh Radford took a 3-2 lead, capitalizing on twp PC errors and a RBI single by Casey Burns, A RBI double by Mantel made it a 4-2 game.
Two outs in the bottom of the seventh PC mounted a rally with a base hit by Ruff. She came home off a RBI double by Legacki who, in turn, scored the tying run off a RBI double by Rogers, forcing extra innings.
After giving up two unearned runs in the seventh, Loudermelk, in relief for Seigler since the fifth inning, struck out the next four of six batters to help the Blue Hose stay in the game to the 10th.
With two outs in the top of the 10th, Rowe laced a single to left, driving in Nia Chiles, who just missed the tag from Ashley as Radford went up 5-4.
Back to back errors by Radford to open the bottom of the 10th allowed PC to quickly tie the game at 5-5. After intentionally walking Taylor to load the bases, Miller came up to bat and collected her seventh hit-by-pitch of the season to push across the game-winner as PC took the 6-5 come-from-behind win.
Seigler started for PC in the second game, going 5.0 innings and surrendering five hits and two earned runs. Loudermelk picked up her second win of the day to move to 7-3 on the year. In 5.0 innings of work she gave up three unearned runs off three hits, while walking none and striking out five for second time in as many games.
Pacing PC in batting in game two were Petik, Rogers and Taylor, all of whom recorded two hits. Miller led the team with two RBI.
Tiffany Brown, in relief in game two, picked up the loss for Radford, giving up four runs off four hits in 5.1 innings. Mantel was three for five with one RBI, while Rowe was two-of-four with three RBI.
