Late Inning Heroics Lift Blue Hose over Zips

The Presbyterian College softball team scored five runs in the final two innings, which included a game-winning two-RBI double by Erin Taylor in the seventh, to rally past Akron in a 6-5 win in the first game of the day at the Rebel Spring Games being held in Winter Haven, Fla.

PC, which improves to 7-6, faces Lehigh in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday at 12:15 p.m. The Blue Hose round out tournament action Sunday against Bucknell at 9 a.m., and Creighton at 11:15 a.m. Akron drops to 6-10 and plays Florida A&M in its second game of the day.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jill McLean and Kersten Legacki posted back to back base hits to put runners on first and third. Erin Ruff's single past second brought in McLean to make it 5-4. Taylor steps up to the plate and sends the ball to the fence for a double that drives in pinch runner Courtney Lawton and Ruff for the game-tying and game-winning run, giving PC the come-from-behind 6-5 win.

After two scoreless innings to open the game Akron broke the stalemate with two in the top of the third, with Cassie Gillespie leading off the frame with a base hit to right. She would score two batters later off an error at first. Savannah Fruin scored the game's second run off a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Nicholas a couple of plays later.

Akron added another run at the top of the fourth when Taryn Allmon, who reached on a double and advanced to third on a Lena Richards' single, stole home to make it 3-0.

PC cut the margin to two in the bottom of the fourth when Legacki, who was on base off a walk to open the inning, scored off a RBI double from Ruff.

The Zips responded the next inning when Nicholas knocked over her second home run of the season, this one over the left field wall to make it 4-1 in favor of Akron.

Legacki and Shelby Petik led off the bottom of the six with back to back hits and advanced to second and third off an Akron error and a stolen base. Hope Rogers brought them home off a single through the right side to cut the Zips' lead to just one, 4-3.

Akron made it a two run game in the top of the seventh with a home run by Fuin, her third of the season.

Katie Brown, coming in relief, threw 2.1 innings and scattered three hits and one earned run to earn her first win of the season (1-0). Erin Seiler (6-5) pitched a complete game for Akron, giving up five earned runs off 10 hits, with 12 strikeouts.

Leading PC offensively was Taylor, who went three-for-four with two RBI. Ruff and Rogers both collected two RBI as well. Ruff and Legacki both finished with two hits apiece. Akron was led by Nicholas with her two RBI and Allmon, who had two hits on the day.
