The Presbyterian College softball team held an early 2-0 lead over Gardner-Webb, but was unable to hold off the late surge by the Runnin' Bulldogs, who scored two runs in the sixth inning and a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to take the 3-2 victory. PC drops to 21-19 and 7-7 in league play, while Gardner-Webb moves to 18-21 and 4-8 in the conference. Leading for PC was Megan Anderson who went 1-3 with one hit and two RBI.
PC threatened in the second inning, after Anderson reached first on an error and Kersten Legacki doubled to right field, giving PC two on with zero outs. Gardner-Webb got of the jam with a strikeout and two groundouts, as PC ended the inning with both runners stranded. The Blue Hose came back in the third to start the scoring, after a walk and a single by Erin Ruff put two runners on for PC. With two outs, Megan Anderson hit a single to right field to plate both and give PC the 2-0 lead.
Neither team would score in the next two and a half innings, with both sides going down in order in the fourth and fifth innings.
After retiring the first three Blue Hose batters in the top of the sixth, GWU opened their half of the inning with a Megan Champion single to center field. Another single by Allie Barrick gave the Runnin' Bulldogs two runners on base with one out. Kaylee Wacaster then hit a double to left center that drove both home to tie the game 2-2. GWU threatened with another runner on base, but PC forced a pop up to end the inning.
The Blue Hose were unable to get anything going in the seventh, and three ground outs ended the top half of the inning, still tied 2-2. A double by Scarlett Harris put a runner on second with no outs, and a bunt advanced the runner to third. A pop out brought Gardner-Webb to their last out, but Callie Thornton singled to left to drive in the game-winning run.
PC ended the day with four hits and zero errors, with Anderson recording both RBI. Gardner-Webb tallied five total hits with one error and three RBI. Sydney Seigler took the loss for the Blue Hose (9-9), giving up three earned runs on five hits, with two strikeouts. Devyn Terry (4-5) struck out one and gave up one earned run on four hits.
The Blue Hose return to conference action this weekend, when they travel to Radford for a three-game series. The two teams meet for a doubleheader starting at 1pm on Saturday, and a single game Sunday at 1pm.
