A pair of two-RBI doubles by Longwood in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings was enough for the Lancers to take the eventual 4-0 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in an elimination game of the Big South Tournament presented by Musco Sports Lighting, held in Rock Hill, S.C., on the campus of Winthrop.
PC ends its season at 25-28 overall while Longwood improves to 35-18 and faces Coastal Carolina Friday at 4:30 p.m.
A pitching game early in the contest, PC collected just two hits in the first four innings, those coming from Hope Rogers and Blaire Miller. Katie Brown was solid early, keeping the Lancers hitless the first nine outs.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Karleigh Donovan broke the no-hitter with a double to right center. The next batter walked, with Kelsey Sweeney bringing both runners home with a double to right to give Longwood the 2-0 lead.
Sydney Gay continued to control the circle for the Lancers, striking out her eighth and ninth batters of the game in the top of the fifth.
Longwood added two more in the fifth off a two-RBI double by Kaylynn Batten to go up 4-0. Runners were on base off a hit by pitch on Justina Augustine and a single from Krista Kelly.
PC got runners on first and second in the sixth after Jenna Harris was hit by a pitch and Megan Anderson recorded a single to right. They wouldn't get any farther as the next two batters struck out and flied out.
The Blue Hose threatened again in the seventh after Jordan Ashley picked up a one-out walk and Madison Longanecker got on off an error. PC lined to the shortstop the next at-bat, with the shortstop tagging second for the game-ending double-play.
Brown went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs off four hits, for her 13 loss of the season. Gay took the win (16-6), striking out 10 and surrendering just three hits in the shutout
PC finished with three hits, coming from Rogers, Anderson, and Miller. Longwood posted four hits and was led by Sweeney and Batten with one hit and two RBI each.
