Women’s Tennis Sweeps Day One of Alabama State Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team defeated Alabama State, 5-2, and Alabama A&M, 7-0, on the opening day of the Alabama State Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. The Blue Hose improved to 6-2 on the year with the wins and have now won four straight.

PC got the day started with a 5-2 victory over the Hornets. The Blue Hose swept the three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. Tracy Johnson and Nicole Croxton continued their strong play with a 6-3 win on court one, while Demi Henschel and Caroline Ferrari rebounded nicely with a 6-0 frame on court two. Celine Schepers and Brittany Nuttall completed the sweep with a 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 3 to put PC in front.

Singles action would see PC take four of the six matches to claim the victory. Johnson bounced back from her first loss of the year with a three-set win on court two, 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 1-0 (10-4). The back half of the lineup carried the victory with PC taking courts four, five and six. Croxton won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Nuttall took a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 5 and freshman Katie Thompson won 6-1, 6-3.

In the latter match, PC recorded its third 7-0 victory of the season, this one coming against the Bulldogs. The Blue Hose took all nine matches in the win, all in straight sets. In doubles, Johnson and Croxton took court one, 6-4, to improve to 6-2 on the season. Schepers and Nuttall went 6-0 on court two and the pair of Ferrari and Thompson, playing together for the first time, won 6-2 on court three.

In singles, Schepers returned to her winning ways after dropping her first singles match of the year earlier in the day, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1. Johnson took No. 2, 6-1, 7-5, and Ferrari followed at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3. Croxton kept it going with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, while Nuttall won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Thompson, who remains unbeaten this season at 6-0, managed a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court six.

The Blue Hose wrap up play in Alabama tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. ET match against Jacksonville State.
