PC Falls to Winthrop in Conference Opener

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team fell to defending conference champ Winthrop, 6-1, on Tuesday at the Templeton Tennis Courts. The loss ends the five-match winning streak for PC and drops it to 7-3 overall, 0-1 in the Big South, while Winthrop improves to 5-2, 2-0 in the Big South.

Winthrop opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches in order to capture the doubles point. Celine Schepers and Beth Taylor teamed up for the 6-3 win on court three. The Eagles would take courts one and two, though, to take the early 1-0 match lead.

WU took five of the six singles matches to earn the victory. PC recorded a win at No. 5, as Brittany Nuttall won 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). Tracy Johnson came up just short of knocking off the league's defending Player of the Year, Lauren Proctor, on court one. Proctor took the opening set, 6-2, but Johnson answered by taking set two, 6-4. The final set was a tight one but ultimately Proctor prevailed, 7-5. Winthrop won the remaining matches in straight sets.

PC returns to action next week when it travels to Orlando, Fla. for matches over Spring Break.
