CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team defeated USC Upstate, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Templeton Tennis Courts in Clinton, S.C. The Blue Hose improved 4-2 on the year, while USC Upstate remains winless at 0-5.

The Spartans took the early lead in the match by claiming two of three doubles match. After USC Upstate took court two, 6-0, Celine Schepers and Beth Taylor continued their strong play with a 6-3 win on court three. The Spartans would prevail on court one, 6-4, to make the 1-0 match lead.

PC responded in singles play, though, taking four of the six matches to claim the 4-3 victory. Brittany Nuttall got things started with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court five to even the match at 1-1. Schepers then improved to 5-0 on the year with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court one to put the Blue Hose in front.

Freshman Katie Thompson also remains unbeaten on the season, after claiming a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 to improve to 4-0 in singles play. Rookie Beth Taylor would clinch the match for the Blue Hose, earning a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 to make it a 4-1 PC advantage.

The Spartans would take each of the final two matches of the day, both decided in three sets, on courts two and four. Tracy Johnson fell for the first time this season with Upstate's Carol Sigaki taking a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) on court two. Nicole Croxton put up a good battle on court four but ultimately fell in three to Vale Zarama, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (13-11).

PC is back in action this weekend with three matches in Montgomery, Ala., starting with Alabama State on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
