Blue Hose Basketball Falters at West Virginia

Morgantown, W.Va. - Kysre Gondrezick scored a game-high 20 points to lead the West Virginia women's basketball team to a 56-40 win over Presbyterian College on Sunday afternoon at WVU Coliseum. Trinity Johnson paced the Blue Hose with 14 points, while Tess Santos added eight points.

Scoring the Game
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first quarter and posted field goal percentages below .250. Presbyterian then started the second quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to just three, 11-8, with 8:30 remaining. However, a 15-7 run to end the half saw the Mountaineers leading 26-15 at the break.

Johnson connected on a three-pointer with 8:34 left in the third quarter to make it a 10-point game, 30-20, but West Virginia sank three threes on subsequent possessions to extend the lead to 16 points, 39-23, at 4:23.

West Virginia grew the lead to 26 points in the fourth quarter, 56-30, with 4:16 to play. Alessia Capley, Santos and Johnson combined for an 10-0 run to end the game for PC and reach the final score of 56-40.

Player of the Game
Gondrezick scored a game-high 20 points on 8-16 (.500) shooting including four three-pointers. Esmery Martinez had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with six points for West Virginia.

Notables
Presbyterian was 11-14 (.790) from the charity stripe with Kacie Hall (5-6), Johnson (4-4) and Jade Compton (2-2) scoring for PC.

Le'Mesha Madden scored her first collegiate points with a three-pointer in the third quarter.

Compton pulled down another five rebounds to tie her total from the season opener and lead PC.

Tess Santos had a season-best eight points on 2-5 shooting from three.

By the Numbers
Presbyterian opened the game 0-7 from three and ended the game just 5-22 (.230) while West Virginia was 7-19 (.370). PC ended the game 12-49 (.240) from the floor compared to 21-55 (.380) for WVU.

West Virginia controlled the boards, 51-21.

The Blue Hose recorded nine steals and scored 16 points off 26 WVU turnovers, while the Mountaineers recorded only four steals and scored 12 points off 15 PC turnovers.
