Blue Hose Drop Road Battle At Radford

RADFORD, Va. –The Presbyterian College men's basketball team was unable to find an answer for Radford from beyond the arc as the hosts connected on 10 threes en route to an 81-71 victory on Thursday night from the Dedmon Center in Radford, Virginia. Cory Hightower led all scorers with 21 points on eight-of-16 shooting.
 
Scoring the game
The Blue Hose got out to an early 7-3 lead after a layup from Chris Martin at the 16:19 mark of the first half. Radford answered with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to take an 11-9 advantage. The teams traded mini-runs over the next three minutes with the Highlanders taking an 18-16 lead with 10:20 remaining in the first half. The hosts used an 11-4 spurt behind 3 three-pointers to take a 29-20 advantage. The Blue Hose fought back to make it a six-point game at 33-27 before a 5-2 burst gave Radford the nine-point lead, 38-29. At the 2:07 mark, senior JC Younger became the fifth player in the D1 era to eclipse 1,000 career points. PC responded down the stretch scoring the last six points to make it a three-point game heading to the break at 38-35.  
 
Radford opened the second half scoring the first six points to take a 44-35 lead with 17:31 to play in the game. PC kept the deficit within single digits over the next six minutes before a 9-3 burst from the Highlanders gave them a 53-41 lead. The Highlanders answered PC's runs keeping it a 14-point lead with 10:05 to play. The Blue Hose answered with a quick 6-2 burst to cut it to a 10-point game at 62-52. Both teams traded mini-runs with Radford maintaining a 10-point lead, 72-62 with 3:43 in the second half. The Blue Hose cut the lead to nine in the final minute however would not get any closer as Radford took the 81-71 victory on Thursday night.
 
Players of the Game
Cory Hightower led all scorers with 21 points on eight-of-16 shooting from the field for the Blue Hose. He added four rebounds and a pair of assists in the contest. Chris Martin added 14 points as he connected on five-of-eight field goals. Devin Hutchinson and Carlik Jones led Radford with 17 points apiece. Devine Eke led all players with 10 rebounds for the Highlanders.
 
Stats of the Game
Both teams shot well as they both made at least 51% of their field goals. PC shot 51.0% for the game after hitting 15-of-27 from the field in the first half (55.6%). Radford shot 54.2% in the second half for 51.9% for the game. The Highlanders made 10 threes, while PC connected on seven from beyond the arc. Radford led rebounds 34-23 and assists 20-7. Radford connected on 15 free throws and PC made 14 from the charity stripe.
 
For the Record
PC drops to 9-17 overall and 6-7 in the Big South, while Radford improves to 16-9, 11-2.
 
Notables
Senior JC Younger in the first half eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau becoming the fifth Blue Hose in the D1 era to hit 1,000-point milestone.

The Blue Hose host Winthrop Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m., and is the second game of a doubleheader with the women's team, that faces Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. The game airs live on the radio on WPCC. In a change from the schedule, the game will be shown on ESPN3, instead of ESPN+.
