Senior Duo Helps PC Topple League-Leading HPU

CLINTON, S.C. – The senior duo of Jade Compton and Tess Santos helped lead Presbyterian College to a 65-56 win over league-leading High Point on Saturday afternoon. Compton paced the Blue Hose with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Santos added a season-high 13 points as PC snapped its six-game losing streak to the Panthers.

Scoring the Game
 
The Panthers netted the first six points of the afternoon on their way to a 10-2 start. Presbyterian responded with the next seven, cutting the deficit to 10-9 after one.
 
The Blue Hose run continued into the second quarter, as PC eventually made it 12 straight points to take its first lead of the afternoon, 14-10, with 8:14 left in the first half. A 9-2 High Point response put the visitors back on top, 21-18, at the 3:42 mark. The two teams traded the lead a couple more times before Compton hit a three in the final minute of the period to send the game into halftime tied at 25-25.
 
Presbyterian tallied the first four points after halftime to regain the advantage at 29-25, but HPU responded with a 9-0 spurt to move ahead 34-29 with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. PC countered with a 9-0 run of its own, punctuated by back-to-back three-pointers by Compton and Santos. The run helped the Blue Hose to a 40-38 edge through three quarters.
 
With the game deadlocked at 52-52, Maleia Bracone drove to the basket for a layup which ignited a 7-0 PC spurt to put the Blue Hose ahead 59-52 with 1:43 to play. The run also included Santos' fourth three-pointer of the game, which set a new season high for the senior. High Point got as close as four, 60-56, in the final minute, but Presbyterian was able to ice the game from the free throw line.

Compton collected her fourth double-double of the season, topping the Blue Hose in points with 18, and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Santos netted a season-best 13 points, while Trinity Johnson went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line on her way to 12 points. Johnson also added six rebounds and four assists. Skyler Curran paced the Panthers with a game-high 21 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
 
Stats of the Game
PC connected on 19-of-52 (36.5 percent) of its field goal attempts, including a season-high tying eight makes from three-point land. High Point hit 19-of-56 (33.9 percent) from the floor, and was held to just four makes on 21 three-point tries (19.0 percent). The Blue Hose canned 19-of-28 (67.9 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Panthers made all 14 of their free throw attempts. Presbyterian dominated on the glass, outrebounding HPU 42-32.
 
Notables
- The win snapped a six-game skid for the Blue Hose in the series against the Panthers.
- Compton led the Blue Hose in scoring and rebounding fourth the fourth game in a row, scoring 18 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. The double-double was the senior's team-best fourth of the season. She has now scored in double-figures in a career-best seven straight contests.
- Santos went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc on her way to a season-high 13 points. Her four three-pointers were also a season high, and one shy of her career high.
- Compton and Johnson are tied for the team lead with nine double-digit scoring games apiece this season.
