PC Falls Victim to Longwood Surge

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team held a double-digit advantage in the second half, but Longwood rallied to take the opener of the teams' Big South Conference series, 73-66, on Friday evening. Tionna Carter paced the Blue Hose with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds.

Scoring the Game
The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the first quarter, as the lead changed hands 11 times, and neither team was able to gain more than a three-point advantage. Jade Compton banked a shot home in the final moments of the quarter to give the Blue Hose a 20-19 edge after one. Carter netted nine of PC's 20 points in the period.
 
The Compton basket sparked a 12-0 run which put Presbyterian on top 29-19. The run included Tess Santos' 100th three-pointer as a Blue Hose. The Lancers responded to PC's run with one of their own, as the hosts scored 11 in a row to briefly regain the advantage, 30-29, with 3:53 remaining in the quarter. After a couple more lead changes, the Blue Hose closed the half with a 7-2 to spurt to take a 38-35 edge into the locker room.
 
Presbyterian's run continued into the third quarter, as the Blue Hose tallied the first six points of the period to open up a 44-35 advantage at the 7:05 mark. During PC's extended 13-2 spurt, the Blue Hose held the Lancers off of the scoreboard for over six and a half minutes. The margin grew as high as 13 for Presbyterian after an 8-2 run made it 52-39 with 3:36 to go. A trio of three-pointers helped Longwood get back to within 55-50 at the end of the third.
 
The Blue Hose defense kicked it up a notch to start the fourth, as the Lancers went without a basket for another four-minute stretch. Santos canned a three-pointer at the 7:23 mark to get PC's advantage back into double-figures at 60-50. A 14-2 Longwood response put the hosts in front for the first time in the second half, 64-62, with 3:02 to play. Nyah Willis knotted the game at 64-64 with a pair of free throws, but the Lancers closed the contest with a 9-2 spurt to complete their comeback.
 
Players of the Game
Carter led Presbyterian with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Santos (13), Compton (12) and Willis (10) also scored in double-figures for the Blue Hose, while Trinity Johnson handed out a game-high eight assists. Akila Smith topped the Lancers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kyla McMakin and Anne-Hamilton Leroy chipped in 12 points apiece.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66), while Longwood connected on 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field. The Blue Hose enjoyed a 45-33 advantage on the glass, which led to a 19-5 edge in second chance points. PC was also plus-8 (38-30) in points in the paint.
 
Notables
- During PC's 12-0 run in the first half, Santos hit the 100th three-pointer of her Blue Hose career. The senior is the eighth player in PC's DI era (2007-present) to make 100 career triples. Santos is now tied for seventh with Taylor Petty (2015-17) with 101 career three-pointers.
- Carter's 19 points were one shy of her season high. The sophomore also registered a pair of blocks to tie Santos for fifth-most in PC's DI era.
- Compton netted 12 points to reach double-digits for the eighth straight game, a new career high.
- Johnson's eight helpers tied her season high and came one shy of tying her career high. As a team, PC recorded a season-high 18 assists.
- Maleia Bracone equaled her career high with six rebounds.
