Dominant Fourth Quarter Propels Blue Hose Past Lancers

PC Picks Up 100th Big South Regular Season Win

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team outscored Longwood 30-10 in the fourth quarter to break open a tight contest and knock off the Lancers 77-56 in Big South Conference action on Saturday evening. The win was PC's 100th regular season Big South win. Maleia Bracone led the five Blue Hose in double-figures with a game-high 17 points.

Scoring the Game
Longwood got out to a 5-2 start, but PC evened the score at 9-9 on a Bracone three-pointer at the 5:03 mark. After the Lancers briefly nudged in front again at 13-12, the Blue Hose closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 19-13 lead.
 
The first four points of the second quarter went to the Lancers, trimming PC's edge to 19-17 at the 8:51 mark. Moments later, Jade Compton halted the run with a three-pointer to bump Presbyterian's advantage back to five, 22-17. The margin remained between three and five points until an old-fashioned three-point play brought Longwood within two, 32-30, in the final seconds of the half.
 
The two teams traded the advantage back-and-forth a couple times early in the third quarter before a 7-1 Longwood spurt put the hosts up 42-38 with 5:21 remaining. Presbyterian countered with an 11-4 run over the rest of the quarter, capped by another Bracone three-pointer, to take a 47-46 edge into the final period.
 
With the game deadlocked at 49-49, Georgia Stockton buried a three-pointer at the 7:13 mark to jumpstart a 7-0 PC run which gave the visitors a 56-49 edge. Following three Longwood free throws to cut the margin to four, Presbyterian ran off the next 11 in a row, which boosted the lead to 67-52 with 1:28 remaining. From there, the Blue Hose salted the game away from the free throw line. PC outscored Longwood 30-10 in the fourth quarter, the most points the Blue Hose have scored in the fourth quarter in program history.
 
Players of the Game
Bracone paced the five Blue Hose in double-figures with a game-high 17 points and added a game-high four steals. Also in double-digits for PC were Tionna Carter (14), Trinity Johnson (13), Compton (11) and Nyah Willis (11). Compton pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and handed out a game-high five assists. Akila Smith led the Lancers with 16 points, while Kyla McMakin chipped in 14.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian went 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Longwood made 21-of-61 (34.4 percent) from the floor, and was limited to just two three-pointers on 25 attempts (8.0 percent). The Blue Hose connected on 29-of-37 (78.4 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lancers made 12-of-16 (75.0 percent) from the foul line.
 
Presbyterian edged Longwood 39-38 on the glass, and has outrebounded its opponent in 13 of 16 games this season. The Blue Hose forced 20 turnovers, while committing a season-low tying 12.
 
Notables
- The win was PC's 100th regular season Big South Conference win.
- Presbyterian's 77 points were a season high.
- With its 30 points in the fourth quarter, PC set a new program record for points scored in the fourth quarter. The Blue Hose were two points shy of tying their record for most points in a single quarter in program history.
- Presbyterian's 29 made free throws and 37 free throw attempts both established new program-bests against a Big South opponent. The 29 makes were one shy of the team's DI era single-game record.
- With its seventh Big South win of 2020-21, Presbyterian matches its conference win total from last season.
- Saturday marked the first time since 2011 that five Blue Hose scored in double-figures.
- Bracone's game-high 17 points were one shy of her career high. The freshman tied her career high for three-pointers (3) and steals (4).
- Carter added 14 points, which included a career-high eight made free throws on a career-high 10 attempts. The sophomore also blocked a pair of shots to move into fifth in PC's DI era (2007-present) for career blocks with 43.
- Compton tallied 11 points to extend her career-best streak of double-digit scoring games to nine in a row. She also handed out a game-high five assists to set a new career high.
- Johnson grabbed three steals to surpass former teammate Kacie Hall (2016-20) for fifth in PC's DI era in career steals with 132.
- Willis went a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line on her way to 11 points.
- Alessia Capley scored a season-best five points and tied her season high with six rebounds in a season-high 15 minutes of action.
