Compton, Willis Lead PC Past Asheville

CLINTON, S.C. – Jade Compton registered her fifth double-double of the season (27 points, 11 rebounds) and Nyah Willis netted a career-best 21 points to help Presbyterian College knock off UNC Asheville 82-64 in Big South Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

Scoring the Game
Trailing 3-2 in the early going, Presbyterian used an 11-1 run, capped by a Willis layup, to grab a 13-4 edge at the 4:54 mark. During this stretch, the Blue Hose held the Bulldogs without a field goal for over four minutes. Asheville countered by rattling off the next 13 in a row to grab a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
A quick 7-0 spurt to open the second quarter put the Blue Hose back on top, 20-17, at the 8:25 mark. After an Asheville triple briefly evened the score, another seven straight by Presbyterian put the hosts in front 27-20 with 6:01 remaining in the half. The margin crept up to eight, 34-26, but UNC Asheville trimmed it back to 38-34 heading into halftime.
 
Presbyterian tallied the first seven points after halftime, extending its advantage into double-digits for the first time, 45-34, with 7:40 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 47-39, but PC answered by ripping off nine in a row to push its lead to 56-39 with 4:01 to go. Asheville knocked down a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the quarter to back within 62-49 heading into the fourth.
 
UNC Asheville got as close as 11 on a three-pointer at the 5:52 mark, but the Blue Hose maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entirety of the final period.
 
Players of the Game
Compton poured in a game-high 27 points on 13-of-17 shooting and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while Willis added a career-high 21 points. Tess Santos chipped in 12 points, while Trinity Johnson had eight points and a game-high seven assists. Three Bulldogs scored in double-figures, led by Amaryah Corpening who had 19. Nadiria Evans netted 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Asheville.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian connected on 33-of-60 (55.0 percent) from the field, including 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from beyond the arc. UNC Asheville made 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) from the floor, and hit nine of its 23 triple tries (39.1 percent). The Blue Hose knocked down 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Bulldogs made 9-of-15 (60.0 percent).
 
The Blue Hose dominated in the paint, claiming a 38-28 rebounding advantage and a 52-16 edge in points in the paint. PC also won the turnover margin and committed a season-low 11 miscues.
 
Notables
- The victory was Presbyterian's eighth Big South win of the season, which surpasses last season's total of seven. At 8-7 in league play, this is the latest in the season that PC has had a winning record in conference play since 2016-17, when the Blue Hose posted a 10-8 mark in the Big South.
- The win also snapped a four-game losing streak for the Blue Hose in the series with the Bulldogs.
- Presbyterian's 82 points established a new season high, eclipsing the mark set in Saturday's win at Longwood. 
- The 33 made field goals by the Blue Hose established a new program record against a Big South foe.
- Compton's double-double was her team-leading fifth of the season and ninth of her PC career. The senior's 27 points were the most scored by a Blue Hose player this season and tied for sixth-most in the program's DI era (2007-present). Her 13 made field goals were a career high, and also tied the DI era single-game record. Compton has scored in double-digits in a career-best 10 straight games.
- Willis went 8-for-13 from the floor and netted a career-high 21 points, extending her double-digit scoring streak to a career-best three in a row. Her eight made field goals were a career high.
- Wednesday's game marked the first time PC has had two players score 20+ points in a game this season. Willis is the third different Blue Hose to score 20+ points in a game this season.
- Santos scored 12 points and has netted double-digits in four of her last five games. The senior also blocked three shots to surpass teammate Tionna Carter for fifth in career blocks in the DI era with 44.
- Johnson notched a pair of steals to tie Janie Miles (2014-18) for fourth in the DI era in career steals with 134.

Presbyterian has a bye this coming weekend, and then returns to the court on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, for a series against Hampton at the Templeton Center.
