Late Triple Sinks Blue Hose Against Bulldogs

CLINTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville hit a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to eke out a 61-59 win and spoil the Presbyterian College women's basketball team's second half surge in Big South Conference action on Tuesday evening. Trinity Johnson led the Blue Hose with a season-high 19 points.

Scoring the Game
Trailing 8-6 in the early going, the Blue Hose scored the next seven points to move ahead, 13-8. Asheville countered with the final six points of the period to take a 14-13 edge after one.
 
Back-to-back baskets by Tionna Carter put PC briefly on top, 17-14, in the early stages of the second quarter. The Bulldogs rattled off the next 11 in a row to open up a 25-17 lead. Presbyterian cut the deficit back to five at 25-20, but Asheville took a 34-24 advantage into the halftime locker room.
 
With Asheville in front 36-26, Presbyterian went on a 13-0 run to overtake the Bulldogs and grab a 39-36 edge with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter. During the run, PC kept the visitors off of the scoreboard for more than five minutes. After the Bulldogs briefly tied it, Carter knocked home a pair of free throws to put Presbyterian up 41-39 through three. The Blue Hose outscored the Bulldogs 17-5 in the period.
 
Presbyterian built the margin to six, 49-43, early in the fourth quarter, but the lead was wiped out by an 8-0 spurt which nudged the Bulldogs back ahead, 51-49, with 4:21 on the clock. Johnson answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing PC possession, and the Blue Hose maintained an advantage of between one and three points until the final minute.
 
An Asheville free throw leveled the score at 58-58 with 14 seconds to play, but Johnson drew a foul at the other end and knocked home a free throw to give PC a 59-58 edge with six ticks remaining. With 1.9 seconds to go, Amaryah Corpening canned a three-pointer that Presbyterian could not answer on the game's final possession.
 
Players of the Game
Johnson led the Blue Hose with a season-high 19 points and a game-high five assists. Carter added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds for PC. Corpening poured in a game-high 22 points and also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Asheville.
 
Stats of the Game
Presbyterian made 19-of-55 (34.5 percent) from the floor, while UNC Asheville connected on 24-of-60 (40.0 percent) of its field goal attempts. The Blue Hose knocked down 17-of-24 (70.8 percent) from the free throw line, while the Bulldogs made 7-of-10 (70.0 percent).

Notables
- The five points surrendered by Presbyterian in the third quarter tied a season-low for points allowed in a quarter, and were the fewest allowed in a quarter against a Big South opponent in 2020-21.
- As a team, PC recorded a season-high five blocks, with two apiece from Carter and Tess Santos.
- Johnson's 19 points were a season high. The junior also equaled her season-best with three steals and moved into fourth place in PC's DI era (since 2007) in career steals with 137.
