Coston Scores as Presbyterian Falls to Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team gave everything they had against a Winthrop team fighting at the top of the Big South standings, falling in the final seconds in a 2-1 defeat.

FINAL SCORE: Winthrop 2 – Presbyterian 1
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-12-1, 0-5-1), Winthrop (6-3-2, 4-1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Presbyterian played on the front foot in the opening five minutes as they pressured Winthrop and won themselves a corner. The early pressure paid off for the Blue Hose as they caused a turnover and Reyna Coston blasted a shot from 25 yards out that soared into the top left corner, giving Presbyterian a 1-0 lead. Presbyterian earned another corner minutes later as Coston looked for her second, but her shot looped over the net. Winthrop would get a goal of their own as a defensive turnover from Presbyterian led to a free shot from the Eagles' attacker as she tied it, 1-1. Serrano was forced to make a save from a one-on-one to keep the game tied midway through the first half. An eventful first half came to a close with the score still even at one apiece.

The second half started with as much pace as the first with both teams having an attempt at goal, but neither finding the back of the net. Caroline Dipzinski had a chance as she found herself in the penalty box, but the Winthrop defenders closed down quickly and put her off as her shot went over the net. Kelly Hall made her first save as she replaced Megan Serrano, preventing Winthrop from taking the lead in the 62nd minute. Hall was called upon again as a Winthrop corner took a deflection and hit Hall in front of the net before being cleared. Kori Lawrence took aim with under 10 minutes to go, but her shot went high as both teams were getting chances to take the lead. Winthrop would end up scoring the game-winner with six seconds remaining in regulation as Presbyterian was stunned, falling 2-1.

Coach Purcell's Thoughts
"I am pleased with how we played today. Yeah, losing that way is tough, but we left everything out on that field and the team did a great job against a top team in the conference. Our first half was good and I think if we clean up a few mistakes we possibly win. This game brought us closer together as a group. We'll keep our heads held high as we look towards Saturday."

UP NEXT:
The Blue Hose return to Martin Stadium for their penultimate home match as they host USC Upstate on Saturday, October 9 at 7pm.
