First Half Trips up Presbyterian at Home

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team was not able to pick up a win in their second to last home match as a pair of first half goals by USC Upstate was the difference in the 2-0 loss.

FINAL SCORE: USC Upstate 2 – Presbyterian 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-13-1, 0-6-1), USC Upstate (5-6-1, 3-3-0)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Presbyterian came out with good pressure to start the game as they had USC Upstate hemmed in their own end. Reyna Coston had an early shot as she tried to replicate her goal from Wednesday, but it was saved. Megan Serrano was tested early as well as she made a pair of saves to keep the score level in the opening 10 minutes. Minutes later though, the Spartans would connect and grab a 1-0 advantage. The Blue Hose looked to answer with Sarah Dieffenderfer and Kori Lawrence, but neither of their shots found the target. USC Upstate would double their lead with a goal in the 20th minute. Caitlin Murphy had two chances to put the Blue Hose on the board, but one went wide and the other was saved as Presbyterian trailed 2-0 at halftime.

The Blue Hose were led by Coston in the second half who got off an early shot, but it couldn't get by the USC Upstate keeper. Freshman Kelly Hall replaced Serrano at the start of the second half and made two saves to keep the deficit at two. Coston kept shooting as she was eager to score, and Abby Spellings got a good shot away that was blocked and went out for a corner. Murphy had back-to-back shots as she searched for the top corner, and Hall made another stop to keep Presbyterian alive. A final push by the Blue Hose was all for not as they were unable to get over the two first half goals, falling 2-0.

Coach Purcell's Thoughts
"I thought we played another good game tonight. We set the tone early with pressure and that caused a few errors out of [USC] Upstate. Again, if we eliminate a few mistakes we take it to overtime and who knows what happens then. All in all, I'm proud of how the team played. No matter what happens on that field we will never give up."

UP NEXT:
The Blue Hose begin their final stretch of the season as they head to UNC Asheville on Wednesday, October 13 for a 6pm kickoff.
