Blue Hose Earn Shutout in Home Opener

CLINTON, S.C. –  The Presbyterian College women's tennis team recorded its first victory of the 2021 spring on Wednesday with a 7-0 shutout victory over Belmont Abbey at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

"Today was a really good day with us getting our first win," commented head coach Joel Roberts."I am really happy for the team and we can't wait to get back to it tomorrow against Furman."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Hose got out to a fast start in doubles at No.3 with a 6-0 shutout before a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles secured the first point of the match for PC.
- Belmont Abbey did take the win at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory.
- PC extended the lead to 2-0 with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles for junior Beth Lacey.
- The Blue Hose pushed the advantage to 3-0 when junior Jessica Leeman grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
- The hosts clinched the match at No. 5 singles with freshman Lucianna Piedra earned the straight-set decision.
- Zeba Jamal at No. 2 singles earned a 6-3, 6-4 result which was followed up by senior Samantha Calais winning in straight-sets 7-5, 6-2 to give Presbyterian a 6-0 lead in the match.
- Freshman Alexa Wilson finished off the Blue Hose shutout with a 10-8 tiebreak third set to give PC the 7-0 win.
 
NOTABLES
- Wednesday's match was the first all-time meeting in the DI era between Presbyterian and Belmont Abbey.
- Leeman, Piedra and Wilson each earned their second singles wins of the season on Wednesday.

UP NEXT
- Presbyterian has a quick turnaround as it travels to Greenville for a 3 p.m. match with #24 Furman on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Hose wrap up this busy week on Sunday afternoon back in Clinton with a 1 p.m. serve against College of Charleston.
