Notes

Last Time Out...
After waiting 344 days since the 2020 season was abruptly halted, Presbyterian opened the 2021 season with a pair of shutouts, 8-0 and 9-0 over Columbia International. Jenna Greene tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the opener, while Haley Haselden followed suit with a three-hitter and seven punchouts in the finale. Offensively, freshman Jillian Hewes paced the Blue Hose with three hits and six RBIs for the day, while Courtney White notched three hits of her own and drove in four runs.

Picking Up Where They Left Off...
The Blue Hose boasted the top pitching staff in the Big South in 2020, owning a collective 2.02 ERA and posting a league-high nine shutouts. The 2.02 ERA ranked 30th nationally, and the nine shutouts tied for eighth in the country. Jenna Greene and Haley Haselden did the majority of the work in the circle for PC last season, and both began 2021 on the right foot, each working six scoreless innings against Columbia International. Greene allowed just three baserunners, and retired the final 14 Rams she faced. Her 12 strikeouts tied for third-most in a single game in the program's DI era. Haselden scattered three hits over her six shutout frames and fanned seven, one shy of her career high.

First Impressions...
Four freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Wednesday for PC. Jillian Hewes went 3-for-5, including her first collegiate homer, and led the Blue Hose with six RBIs. Kaitlyn Tucker had a pair of hits, scored in both games and drove in a run. Kara Starnes had a hit and scored in each contest. Bailey Watkins had a pinch-hit single and stole a base in the second game of the twin bill.

Scouting the Aggies...
Like Presbyterian, North Carolina A&T had its opening weekend wiped out, as a planned four-game series against Youngstown State was canceled. The Aggies were slated to open up on Friday with a twin bill at UNCW before that was postponed, meaning N.C. A&T is now scheduled to begin its season on Saturday against Georgia State before facing PC on Sunday afternoon.
