Blue Hose Take Down Gardner-Webb To Improve to 2-0 In League Play

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Big South play on Wednesday with a tight 4-3 decision over Gardner-Webb at the Webb Tennis Complex. It is the first time that PC has started 2-0 in Big South play dating back to 2009.

COACH ROBERTS ON THE MATCH
 "It was a great day for our team as we fought extremely hard and we were able to come out on top," commented head coach Joel Roberts. "We knew Gardner-Webb was a tough team and it was going to be a battle because of all of their matches that have been 4-3 this season. I am really proud of our team and it's a great feeling being 2-0 in conference."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Hose got off to a fast start with a 6-4 win from Alexa Wilson and Samantha Calais at No. 2 doubles before clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win by Beth Lacey and Zeba Jamal at the No. 1 doubles position.
- Gardner-Webb picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker however the Blue Hose had already clinched the doubles point.
- GWU evened the match up at one apiece with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.
- Jessica Leeman got the lead back for PC with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. The lead was short lived as Gardner-Webb once again tied the match up at two with a win at No. 1 singles in straight sets.
- Beth Lacey pushed Presbyterian back out in front with a three-set win at No. 6 singles to give PC a 3-2 lead.
- Freshman Lucianna Piedra rallied in her match after going down 1-0 to help clinch the match for the Blue Hose.
- Gardner-Webb grabbed a win at No. 2 singles to make it a 4-3 final on Wednesday afternoon.
 
NOTABLES
- With Wednesday's win, Presbyterian reached the 2-0 mark in Big South play for the first time. PC began playing in the Big South during the spring of 2009.
- Lacey leads the team with wins in her last three singles matches
- Lacey and Jamal earned their fourth straight doubles win.
 
UP NEXT
The Blue Hose will hit the road for back-to-back matches beginning on Saturday with a trip to Western Carolina at 2 p.m.. Presbyterian will finish out the weekend with a neutral site match against Marshall being played on Charlotte's campus. The match with the Thundering Herd is set to begin at 1 p.m.
