How it Happened
- After USC Upstate picked up the first point of the night, PC came back with the next six for an early 6-1 edge. The Spartans battled back to within one at 9-8, but the Blue Hose answered with a 9-2 surge, including another 6-0 run, to extend the margin to 18-10. A 5-0 spurt fueled a 10-2 Upstate response, as the visitors drew even at 20-20. PC nudged back out in front, 23-21, and got a pair of kills from Paige Cairns down the stretch to put the set away.
- The Spartans got out to a 6-3 start in the second frame. The Blue Hose closed the gap to one on three separate occasions, but USC Upstate held on to the lead. At 14-12, Upstate notched three straight points to widen the margin out to five, 17-12, then stretched it out to 23-15 with a 4-0 spurt. PC got as close as 23-18 before the Spartans put the set away to even up the match at one set apiece.
- Presbyterian rattled off the first four points of the third set, but the Spartans came right back with a 7-2 stretch to wrestle the lead away at 7-6. USC Upstate's advantage stayed at four or fewer until a 5-0 run pushed the cushion out to 23-17. A 4-1 PC spurt got the hosts to within 24-21, but the Spartans held off the Blue Hose to go ahead 2-1 in the match.
- USC Upstate broke a 3-3 deadlock early in the fourth frame with a 13-3 surge to move ahead, 16-6. Trailing 20-11, Presbyterian ripped off 10 of the next 12 points to cut the deficit down to one, 22-21. The Spartans withstood the rally again, and took three of the final four points of the evening to claim the set and the contest.
