CLINTON, S.C. – The finalists for the Kyle Macy Award were announced this week by CollegeInsider.com, with Presbyterian College freshman
Rayshon Harrison (Greenville, S.C.) being named to the list.
Â
Harrison, who was recently named Big South Freshman of the Year, played and started in 20 games, and scored in double figures in all but one. He led the team in scoring in 13 games and earned Big South Freshman-of-the-Week honors seven times, which tied for most in the league in single-season honors. His career-high 31 points against Charleston Southern tied for eighth in the PC DI record book. His 13 rebounds against the Bucs were a career-best and gave him his first double-double.
Â
Harrison led the team in scoring, field goals made and attempts, three-pointers made, defensive rebounds, and steals and was the leading freshman in the conference in scoring, rebounding, FG pct., FT pct., 3-PT FG made, and minutes played. Harrison also made a name for himself in the national stats. He averaged the third most minutes of any other freshman in the nation with 34.4 minutes per game and among scoring leaders, he was third among freshmen (17.2).
The Kyle Macy Award, which is presented annually to the top freshman in Division I college basketball, is named for a guard who starred as a freshman for Purdue.
Â
The 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball" played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws (85.9 percent for the season). He started in 25 of 27 games, helping them to a 16-11 season record.
Â
After playing his freshman year at Purdue, Macy transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1976. He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
Â
The recipient of the 2021 award will be announced on April 1.
