How it Happened
- Presbyterian trailed 7-6 early in the first set, but a quick three points, including a Cairns kill and a Chapman block, put the Blue Hose ahead, 9-7. With PC on top 13-12, Winthrop put together a 5-1 run to retake the lead, 17-14. The Blue Hose got back to within one, 17-16, but five straight from the Eagles pushed the hosts' cushion out to 22-16. PC fought off a pair of set points before WU finished off the first frame.
- Winthrop jumped out to an 8-4 advantage in the second set, and after Presbyterian got back to within two at 8-6, used a 7-2 stretch to increase the margin to 15-8. Battle picked up a kill to start a string of three straight PC points, but the Eagles answered with three of their own to get back to a seven-point cushion, 18-11. The Blue Hose got as close as five, 20-15, but WU again put the set away to take a 2-0 edge into the break.
- A 5-0 run early in the third frame erased PC's 5-3 advantage and put Winthrop on top, 8-5. The Blue Hose drew within a point at 9-8, but the Eagles countered with an extended 8-3 surge to increase their lead to 17-11. Presbyterian trimmed the deficit as low as four on multiple occasions, but could not get any closer as Winthrop sealed the three-set victory.
