Blue Hose Outlast Bulldogs for 14-Inning Victory

CLINTON, S.C. – With darkness on the horizon, the Presbyterian College baseball team outlasted UNC Asheville by the score of 5-4 in 14 innings this afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. Kyle Decker led the offense with four hits and Eric Toth pitched the final 5.2 innings to earn the victory.

NOTABLES
 - Decker paced the offense on Tuesday with a career-high four hits, while Zacchaeus Rasberry, Jake Wyandt, and Kyle Merkle each had two hits.
- Decker also matched his season-high with hits in each of his last five games. 
- Junior Sean Klein has reached base safely in a team-high seven straight games. 
- Senior Kyle Benson matched his career-high with five strikeouts over 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
- Junior Eric Toth pitched the final 5.2 innings allowing one run and striking out a pair to improve to 2-1 on the spring. 
- Tuesday's game is the first Blue Hose contest that has exceeded four hours since April 27, 2019, when PC outlasted Pittsburgh 9-7 in 12 innings. The contest with the Panthers went 4:20.
- The game is also the longest in program history on February 21, 2016, when PC and Furman went 11 innings and played for 4:30.
- 14 innings matches the program record for the longest game in terms of innings played as PC has played two other 14 inning contests with the most recent coming on March 16, 2015, against Gardner-Webb
 
  HOW IT HAPPENED 
- Decker got PC on the board first with an RBI single to take the early 1-0 lead in the second. 
- Asheville grabbed the lead in the fourth with a two-run single to jump out in front 2-1.
- Neither team could scratch across a run until the home half of the eighth when an RBI single from Rasberry tied the game back up at two.
- The Bulldogs regained the lead in their half of the ninth with an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth.
- Following a walk, fielder's choice, and a second Asheville walk the Blue Hose had first and second with one out and Wyandt came through with a single back up the middle to even the game at three.
- Both teams traded scoreless 10th and 11th innings before the Bulldogs jumped back out in front with a solo home run to left to take a 4-3 lead to the home half of the 12th.
- PC answered again taking advantage of a wild pitch and passed ball from UNC Asheville to tie it up once again at four. 
- Neither team scored in the 13th and Toth maintained his strong performance with a scoreless 14th.
- After Brody Fahr reached on a fielding error from Asheville, Rasberry placed a bunt down and took advantage of a Bulldog error that allowed Fahr to score from first and end the marathon contest. 
 
UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose remain at home on Friday, April 9th, and open a three-game weekend set with Radford beginning at 3 p.m. from the PC Baseball Complex. The series wraps up on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a doubleheader.
