Ninth Inning Homers Lead Blue Hose to 5-2 Victory

PC Earned a Postseason Berth Based on League Results on Thursday

ROCK HILL, S.C. –  Kyle Merkle and Jeremiah Boyd each connected on ninth inning home runs to help lead the Presbyterian College baseball team to a 5-2 victory on Thursday afternoon in the series opener over Winthrop at Winthrop Ballpark.

NOTABLES
- Presbyterian was led offensively by Merkle with his two hits including his key ninth inning home run to break the 2-2 tie. Merkle now has eight multi-hit games this season.
- Merkle's matched his season-high reached base streak now at six consecutive games.
- Merkle connected on his fourth home run of the season, while Boyd's long ball was his third on the year.  
- With his fourth inning RBI single, Eric Toth extended his hit streak to six straight games and has now reached base safely in eight consecutive contests.
- Zacchaeus Rasberry with his single on Thursday extended his reached base streak to a season-high 17 games in a row.
- In his second start of the season, senior Brandon Williams tossed a season-high 6.0 innings as he didn't factor in Thursday's decision. Williams tied his season best with three strikeouts set last month against Longwood.
- PC improved to 4-1 when tied after eight innings on the season.
- With his sixth inning stolen base, Rasberry passed head coach Elton Pollock for seventh in the program's modern era record book for stolen bases with 40. Pollock recorded 39 steals during his team with the Blue Hose which spanned from 1992-95.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop got on the board first in the home half of the third with a pair of runs to jump out to the 2-0 lead.
- PC quickly responded in the fourth with an RBI single from Toth before a Sean Klein fielder's choice evened the game at two.
- Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the ninth when Merkle opened the inning with a solo home run to centerfield to untie the game.
- Boyd quickly followed it up with a pinch-hit solo blast to push the lead to 4-2.
- PC tacked on one more in the frame to give them a 5-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish en route to the key victory in the race for a top four seed in the Big South Championship.
 
UP NEXT
- The Blue Hose close out the 2021 regular season on Friday afternoon at noon with a doubleheader against Winthrop in Rock Hill.
