STATESBORO, GA – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team opened their season on Thursday, but the result didn't go the way they planned as they were defeated by Georgia Southern, 1-0.
FINAL SCORE: 1-0 Georgia Southern
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-1), Georgia Southern (1-0)
LOCATION: Eagle Field – Erk Park
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a slow start for both teams as Georgia Southern controlled most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes. Presbyterian came back quickly though as
Daniel Anani drove his way into the box and tried to draw a penalty, but nothing was given.
Voro Rivera Peris got into an attacking position in the 23
rd minute, but his first shot was blocked and his second shot went wide. After Aiden Montoure punched the ball out of the box, freshman
Alex Guzman fired a shot near post, but it was saved and went out for a corner. The Blue Hose earned another chance moments later with a free kick just outside the box and
Connor Hudson got a flick on the ball, but an incredible save kept the game scoreless. The Eagles got the final chance of the half, but the teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
The second half had a similar start to the first half in which both squads tried to find any sort of offense. The Blue Hose had a chance from a free kick, but it was flagged for offsides as the game continued to be tight. Georgia Southern took aim at goal in the 66
th minute, but Montoure watched it go wide with ease. The Eagles took the lead in the 75
th minute on a through ball that Alhaji Tambadu poked over Montoure.
Niklas Hoener took a shot from 35 yards out, but it never threatened the keeper as Presbyterian was searching for the tying goal. The Blue Hose pushed in the final minutes, but never found a good opportunity as the final whistle blew.
