Presbyterian Draws with Hampton in Conference Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team played about as close of a game as possible as they finished scoreless with Hampton, 0-0.

FINAL SCORE: 0-0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-7-1, 0-0-1), Hampton (1-3-1, 0-0-1)
LOCATION: Wanner Stadium – Williamsburg, VA

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Presbyterian looked to jump out on the front foot early as Caitlin Murphy took a quick shot, but it sailed over top of the net. Hampton came back a few minutes later with their own attack, but Megan Serrano wasn't threatened and watched the shot go wide. Freshman Megan Slattery found herself in a position for a shot, but just like Murphy it went high. The Pirates tested Serrano with their next two shots, but the senior keeper swallowed up the two attempts. Serrano was tested moments later, but once again she prevented Hampton from scoring the opening goal. Murphy had her second chance of the evening, this time goal bound, but Hampton's keeper made the save. Emily LaBoon had the next chance for the Blue Hose as she ran up from her defensive position, but her long shot couldn't find twine. Sophia Thomson got the final chance of the half, but the game remained scoreless at the break.

As the second half started both teams had a shot on goal, but both were saved to keep it a 0-0 game. Slattery took a pair of shots as she looked to open the scoring, but the Pirates' keeper made the saves as the game seemed to be opening up. Hampton started to put more shots towards the net, but nothing that ever had a chance of going in. Presbyterian earned themselves a corner in the 78th minute as a goal now would likely be the game winner, but the Blue Hose were unable to put it in the back of the net. Hampton got a corner of their own and got a header from it, but Serrano was up to the task to make the save. Presbyterian had another corner as Kori Lawrence got her head to it but didn't connect well as it went over the net and the game was set for overtime.

The Pirates had the first opportunity of overtime with a high shot, but it was too high as it went over the net. Thomson had a shot right before the end of the first overtime, but it slid just wide of the post as she just missed the game winner.

As Presbyterian kicked off the second overtime, Gwen Keiser took a quick shot to try and surprise the goalkeeper, but it went wide of the left post. Hampton got a corner with a couple minutes to go, but the Blue Hose defense did well to clear the danger as time ran out for a 0-0 final.

Coach Purcell's Thoughts:
"A very hard fought game tonight. I was proud of how hard our players worked and how they pressed to get the goal right to the very end. We need to be more efficient and clinical in attack, but I think we take a lot of positives from this game."

UP NEXT:
The Blue Hose will play their first Big South conference home game as they host Campbell on Wednesday, September 22 at 7pm.
