CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team had an incredible second half performance that saw
Sophia Thomson score her first career goal and
Megan Slattery record her first career assist, but it was not enough in the end as the Blue Hose fell, 2-1.
FINAL SCORE: Longwood 2 – Presbyterian 1
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-9-1, 0-2-1), Longwood (2-5-4, 1-0-2)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood started the game with some early chances, but
Megan Serrano didn't have to worry about any of them as the shots were off target. She would make a save in the 10
th minute as she stopped a 1-on-1, kicking her toe out and preventing the goal. A game filled with throw-ins, Presbyterian made their way down the field to win a corner, but they were unable to capitalize. The Blue Hose thought they had the lead as
Caitlin Murphy had a strike that knuckled a bit, but Longwood's keeper punched it over the net. It wasn't long after Murphy's chance that the Lancers opened the scoring by tapping away a loose ball. Serrano had to quickly re-adjust as she made a save minutes after the goal. The Blue Hose had some pace on the counter, but they couldn't tie the game before half.
Presbyterian kicked off the second half, but Longwood was able to grab a turnover and score to make it 2-0. The Blue Hose were a little shocked, but
Morganne Cartee tried to add a spark with a shot just going wide.
Kori Lawrence then had an opportunity as she struck it with the left foot, but it just went over the crossbar. As the Blue Hose pressed they could feel a goal coming and that's exactly what happened in the form of
Sophia Thomson. She received a pass from fellow freshman
Megan Slattery, took a touch, and slid it under the keeper to get the team back within one. From there on Presbyterian's attack was sending everything towards the net including a
Gwen Keiser looping shot that troubled the Longwood keeper. Serrano was called on in the 80
th minute as she had to make an important save to keep the Blue Hose in it.
Reyna Coston then had a volley that would've been goal of the season if it went in, but it rattled off the crossbar. Presbyterian pushed in the final five minutes, but the clock ticked down and ran out on them as they fell, 2-1.
Coach Purcell's Thoughts
- "I thought from halftime onwards we played some of our best soccer all season. We had chances that threatened Longwood's defense. We need to be more clinical, but I think the results are there for us to take. Our freshmen have stepped up tremendously and have filled every role we ask of them. Despite the result, I am pleased with our team and how they played."
UP NEXT:
The Blue Hose will make their second trip to Charleston this season, this time going up against Charleston Southern on Wednesday, September 29. Kickoff is at 3pm.
