Women's Tennis Begins 2022 Season with Back-to-Back Matches

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team opens its 2022 schedule on Saturday as the Blue Hose host Kennesaw State at 11 a.m. The Blue Hose wrap up the opening weekend with a 3 p.m. first serve on the road against Clemson on Sunday night.

COACH ROBERTS ON OPENING WEEKEND
"Very excited about opening the season this weekend with our first match being at home against Kennesaw State. The team has been training hard and I know they are excited about competing!"

SCOUTING THE OWLS
- Kennesaw State opens the 2022 season with three straight matches beginning on Friday against Wofford before traveling to Clinton on Saturday morning. The weekend wraps up on Sunday for KSU with a trip to Gardner-Webb.
- The Owls were tabbed fifth in the ASUN preseason poll after finishing 6-13 during the 2021 season.
- Senior Ji Youn Lee led the Owls last season with an 11-7 record playing primarily in the No. 2 and 3 spot in singles play. Junior Taylor Dean won nine singles matches last year from the No. 1 spot in the KSU lineup.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Clemson opens the spring season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader facing College of Charleston before hosting the Blue Hose on Sunday night.
- The Tigers finished the 2021 season with a 9-15 record including three wins in the ACC.
-  Clemson has a pair of players in the ITA singles rankings as Cristina Mayorova ranked 70th in the latest ITA ranks and Ali DeSpain checks in at 84.
 
PRESEASON POLL
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team was selected fourth by the league's coaches in the Big South Preseason Poll, as was announced earlier this week.
- The fourth-place selection marks the highest ever preseason ranking the Blue Hose have earned in their time in the Big South surpassing the fifth-place selection during the 2019 preseason.
- Charleston Southern received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Buccaneers were tabbed to win the league. Radford earned a first-place vote and earned 62 points. Campbell totaled 57 points and finished in third place with PC earning 56 points and finishing in fourth in the preseason poll. UNC Asheville was selected fifth with 49 points, while Gardner-Webb slid in sixth place with 47 points. Longwood was chosen seventh in the preseason poll with 27 points, with N.C. A&T (15 points) in eighth and Hampton rounded out the field with 12 points in ninth place.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team wrapped up its 2021 fall season over the weekend at the Wofford Fall Invite led by freshman Claudia Sanchez who advanced to the finals ultimately finishing second in her bracket in Spartanburg.
- Sanchez competed in the black bracket for singles as she picked up an early win over Gardner-Webb via injury before a three-set victory over UNC Asheville before she dropped the finals matchup to Furman.

- Following Sunday's match with Clemson, PC returns to action on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Lander from the Templeton Tennis Courts.
